I’ve been working late for the past couple of weeks and haven’t been riding at all because of that. I have lights but I am more concerned being mugged or having an accident. I ride from the Pentagon to Alexandria (just to the south side of Old Town)…through part of Crystal City, then MVT for a good ways until I hit Old Town, then through Old Town. Once I reach the WW Bridge, I cross over to reach Hwy 1 then it’s on home from there. Has anyone had any problems in that area? I miss being out there and really need/want to ride again (commute). Certainly puts me in a MUCH better mood.

    Thanks

I use Dreft, which is really good for getting odors out of clothes. But, I have another issue: my helmet STINKS! I can’t take the straps out and wash them. I wipe it down, try to spray with Lysol or Febreez, but the smell comes back. Does anyone have any tips on getting rid of the helmet stink?

“- ignored the right of way”

I had that this morning. Where the MVT meets up with the 4-mile trail, there’s a yield sign (for the other traffic). I rang my bell, which actually startled the other rider, but he still ignored the yield sign and proceeded to just ride right in front of me, cutting me off. Glad I was paying attention, or it would have been ugly.

There are so many new features of cars nowadays that motorists SHOULD be able to see us, but I think those features just make the general driving population that much less aware of what (or who) else is out there.

Thanks for that advice. I haven’t encountered that problem yet, and hope I don’t, but now I will be on the lookout for that spot as I come through the tunnel.

I try to wait too. More often than not, I’m the one already in the tunnel when someone else comes through. I don’t pass pedestrians either. However, I did have an accident because I had slowed down, checked, saw that no one was coming through, so I started to proceed. Shortly after that, someone came “barreling” through without regard to oncoming traffic. I was already clipped in and couldn’t get out in time and down I went. Frustrating.

Hi. I am always weary of the wooden bridges. I actually slow down and ride with caution. I see others who just fly over them and it worries me that they will crash, causing further harm to others on the trail. Thanks for your post.

Hi. I’m new to the forum but I agree with the posts on this page. Since moving here, I’m living a car-lite diet (I use it sometimes). I either cycle in to work or ride the metro and it is so nice. I like the idea of the 2MC too. And I would like to ride everywhere. I have one problem…I sweat like crazy. I still ride, and will try to go to places that offer showers, but I sometimes choose to drive somewhere instead of bike, even if it’s just a run up the street, because by the time I get there, I’m soaked. How frustrating is that! Anyway, I just wanted to share my thoughts and nod in agreement to the car-free/lite diet, Capital Bikeshare, and other programs out there. I wish they were implemented in more places throughout the US.
