seems to be a correlation between which foot you put down and turning preference

I’m right handed and right foot dominant. I look left, right, left because duh. Had some close calls when I lived in Japan because of that habit.

From years of skateboarding and snowboarding the left is all about leading with stability and power while the right does all the dexterity stuff, so unclipping right is a must. When I was first getting back in to biking, making very tight left handed turns was much more difficult (likely to have a clipped-in-fallover) than making tight right turns. I’d say getting used to knee-to-handlebar-tight+slow left turns had a similar feeling to me as getting used to riding a board switch.

I feel the same way as you about being on/crossing Columbia pike and Glebe and their various intersections. The country club is my preferred way to get through that area. I’d say I’ve gone through there about 20 times over the past 2 years at all times of day/night and I’ve never gotten any flak for it. It is still posted private property though.

Is this a fit-in-my-backpack sized gnome or are we gonna need to organize a non coffee-club based swap?

    Thanks K!

Since I’m already on the Gnome Channel this month for upcoming Halloween activities I kinda feel like I gotta do this. How much should I pledge?

My bike came with a bottom-tier shimano drivetrain, I was not great about keeping it clean and lubed – would go many months between even looking at it… but I changed the chain 3 times over the course of about 6,000 miles. The last time I put a new chain on, the previous chain was so over stretched that it had indeed worn out the teeth on the gears of the cassette that I used most. It made riding in those gears impossible with the new chain. Ended up getting a replacement (upgraded) cassette and chain at Spokes Etc at about 8,000 miles which set me back about $160.

These days I’m trying to be better about not only cleaning off the chain and relubing it more often, but using an old toothbrush to knock off the black gunky stuff that builds up on the derailleur’s pulley wheels and between the gear teeth, cause it seems like that stuff builds up and grinds away at the parts like goopy sandpaper..

If you don’t have the experience to know in detail why you want to buy and maintain an antique Italian racing bike to commute on, you should probably hold off on doing that. Buy a cheap used road bike to learn all your long term bike maintenance mistakes on for a year or two, or a built to purpose hybrid commuter and once you’ve ruined that bike and know better invest in the bike you will love.

for those of us that want to drive down, where is a good place to park? Is Hains Point open that late?

Others know better than me (so why am I saying anything???), but in my experience, sometimes the gates are open, sometimes they’re closed, at random.

I just checked and street parking along the western part of Ohio drive is 3hr and a tow zone 1am to 9am every day. The small parking lots off ohio ABC are no parking 1-8am. The lot by the Cabi station is marked 2hr and for tennis patrons only so that’s a bit risky though people park there to bike all the time.

I’d park near the ending point – The diner? and bike to the monument start.

So I was looking at the national ranking leaderboard for this year cause for whatever reason my NBC profile won’t load now that the thing is over and I noticed this little gem:
