Thule and Yakima accessories both now work on each others cross bars. If you have the locks and crossbars and I guess a few old accessories for the yakima then I’d try to get the feet or factory roof rack adapter for the round bars and build from there. I have yakima only because the thule surfboard rack is a POS the will dent the side of the board. I bought the Yakima stuff long before they were cross compatible. I recently purchased a yakima bike rack for the top of the truck only because I have a down hill bike that never fit right in my friends Thule. I also like the round bars because of less road noise. Thule has “aero bars” now so there is that. I’ve had the Yakima on five cars in the past ten years and every time I look to see what company has the feet or adapter for the car/truck yakima fits with a cleaner look and a better fit. But really I bought the yakima for the surfboards and have had so much old yakima stuff that changing over now is just silly.

My brother did from union to Pittsburgh with a bike box last week. I talked with amtrak a month ago about box or roll and the best most informed answer I received was you will need a box. My friend does the richmond to here weekly and they won’t even do a boxed bike. I used to pull BS on the train all the time with a boxed bike. I’d walk up to the train with the boxed bike and pull the old “well the guy I talked to said………..” and 7 times out of 10 get away with it. Make sure that BOTH stations have luggage service at the station. I’ve also had a copy of amtrak policy on bikes in my hand and have been turned away from stations that take bikes. I have talked to people that have also told me that the roll on thing was just an experment and due to non use they have killed it. Not really an answer but it’s the best I’ve got.

I’m sure there are many good shops and this is just a personal list of places I know will do good work. I can name some great mechanics but sometimes the shop as a whole is lacking so here is a small list in no order.

Spokes Quaker Lane. I love Ricky Funkhouser
    Spokes Vienna.
Bikes@Vienna. I don’t know if they have “regular” bikes but might be one of the most honest and nice bike shops in dc.
    Freshbikes Falls Church Alex
Bicycle pro shop Georgetown. Tom jackson is the man.
Spokes down in bellview is a little known gem of great mechanics that are almost never backed up.

Ask when buying a bike what the turnaround is on free tune ups most shops are same day or next day. In colorado I found that the shops with “lifetime” adjustments looked like a good deal but were neck deep in work and less likely to fix issues that took even a little effort even when paid for their time.

edit: I forgot proteus bikes and papillion in arlington. If i lived closer to proteus I’d go there twice a week.

It’s cad 5. There will be a mix of cad 2 road racers with 6000 dollar bikes, guys that have entered for the first time with 6000 dollar bikes, people that have not hopped on a bike in three years and the mountain bikers. The start will be an all out brawl of clipping in and raising heart rates but after that about half way in the middle of the pack it’s like a social ride that ends too early. The first lap is just people getting position and after that you’ll be surprised how low key it is. Don’t quit. The first race should be about not quitting and doing the race at your own pace. You will be surprised how well you do. It’s just one big traffic jam and the guys who got out first will stay there until they get to the back of the traffic jam. Just pedal your bike and enjoy the ride. Your not going to hold anyone up. Racing is more fun then watching but after the race watch the other races and see how they go over barriers and deal with loose soil. Get the first race out of the way, have fun, pedal your bike and don’t quit.
