2/25/21 – Duck (likeness of animal or the word)

On February 25, 1970, “Rubber Duckie” premiered on Sesame Street when Ernie sang the song while taking a bath. Fun fact:
“The segment was so popular that the song was issued as a single with the show’s theme song as the flip side. In September, it peaked at #16 on the Hot 100, and on November 16, it once again appeared on Sesame Street, this time in a Season 2 segment again with Ernie performing the song.”

On your ride, capture a likeness of a duck, whether it be an actual duck, an image, or made of rubber. Caveat is that it can’t be your own duck.

Happy hunting!

Being that this is the year of the Freezing Saddles COVID edition, I would like add a COVID related pointless prize called #HeroesWorkHere

Rules:

1. Ride your bike a least a mile to any place that has a sign that contains “heroes” or “thank you.” These could be “Heroes Work Here” or “Not all heroes wear capes”.

2. As we know, heroes can by anywhere. It could be a hospital, school, grocery store, or a police station as long as it has the sign

3. Take a picture of the sign with the location in the background and post in this thread. If you like, you can add a little description about the location

4. Hashtag your ride #HeroesWorkHere on Strava if you’d like to add to the pointless prize leaderboard

5. May add some locations in the future for bonus points that don’t require a sign

Now go find the heroes!

Found this sign on the side of the Clinton Post Office when I went to drop of mail.

Extra Mile 2/24/21 equals about 8 extra miles, that I didn’t get credit for because I forget to restart Strava once I took the pictures. There is a construction site behind my house that I try to go through as much as possible, because if I can’t get through that adds about 8 extra miles to my trip each way. They have been trying different things to block us from getting through and tonight there used a line of trucks. As you can see, I still went through the trucks, but decided to slow down so I could see what they were blocking and how much progress they were making. About 50 feet in, the road was gone. The whole road, good thing that I have two bright lights on the front of my bike and that I was going slow. SMH. Well, I couldn’t get through that and had to go the extra 8 miles, without credit.

2/24/21 – “Charles and Diana” Subanagram Word (5 letters or more)

Prince Charles and Lady Diana announced their engagement to the world on 2/24/81. Infuriating fact: after getting engaged to Charles, Diana was shamed into selling her bicycle because it “wasn’t very regal to be riding around London” 😡

On your ride, find a subanagram word (not the object) using just the letters “Charles and Diana”. Take a snapshot, and post your one pic here in the forum.

Happy hunting!

2/23/21 – Mosaic (likeness or word)

On February 23, celebrate National Tile Day by seeking and taking a snapshot of a mosaic – a picture or pattern produced by arranging together small colored pieces of hard material, such as stone, tile, or glass.

The word “mosaic” is also acceptable, but I think it’s safe to say that we the horde prefer the art :)

Happy hunting!

Hope that you are alright Carol.

It’s a Prius, so a hybrid but not an all electric. (I found this out the hard way, when I posted one and drevil had to tell me it was a Prius rather than a Tesla.) In any event, given the change in rules, it works to give you a point for the day.

Hi Carol,

The only way that I know it was electric was that it was plugged in. I was lucky to see it being charged as I passed the open garage, or I wouldn’t had a clue. And I didn’t know that he changed the rules, I just took a chance on posting it before midnight. The things we do, lol, for this game.

2/18/21 – Full Electric Car (Hybrids OK!)

EDIT: Hybrids like the Prius are OK for today’s hunt.

On National Battery Day, which is February 18, take a picture of a fully electric or hybrid car.

I know this could go all over the place, so a few rules:

1. It CAN be a hybrid (which rely on both battery and gas), e.g., the Toyota Prius, Ford Fusion. Hybrid cars often have the word around the model name
2. It has to be a car that people can ride in on a highway, so no little radio control (RC) cars or golf carts
3. It can’t be at a dealership
4. It can’t be your own

Point scoring for this hunt:

• 1 point for any partially electric/partially gas hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius, or
• 1.5 points for a Tesla (since they are so popular in our area), or
• 2 points for any fully electric car that isn’t a Tesla
• An extra two points if this hybrid/electric car has a bike rack on it (must be clearly visible in the pic)

Happy hunting!

For example, this Tesla with a bike rack would garner you 3 points (1 for car, +2 for bike rack), and a bunch of salivating bike nerds.

Electric Car 2/18/21 I found it being charged in a garage. Don’t know what type of car it is.

POINTLESS PRIZE: QUAXAPALOOZA

As the wife of a local small business owner (Maryland Meadworks), I am sponsoring a pointless prize to encourage supporting your local small businesses on your bikes (aka Quaxing).

Leaderboard: https://freezingsaddles.org/pointless/hashtag/BAFS2021SmallBiz

How to play:

1. Go for a Quax — support a local small business by buying something (any amount) and picking it up via bike. One point per business, and yes, you can do more than one per day, but need to log separate Strava rides to each stop. You only get one point per distinct local biz (so yes, you can come 100 times to Maryland Meadworks, as well you should, but you will only get 1 point for the first visit…)

2. Take a picture of you (wearing a mask), your bike, and your purchase (or if it was a service, perhaps the signage or some such that represents that service) outside as many different small businesses as possible.

3. For your ride to count, use #BAFS2021SmallBiz in your Strava ride title AND include the name of the place you visited, e.g., #BAFS2021SmallBiz Maryland Meadworks (shameless plug, right?) And upload the related photo to the same ride. Mileage does not count unless theres a tie. The points are solely based on the number of unique establishments you support, one per recorded ride (but no limit to how many rides / points you can rack up in a single day).

4. Please play safely: For example, picking up your takeout / growlers (of mead, or even things… that are not mead) curbside (on your bike!)! Again, please take your selfie OUTSIDE the establishment, masked, to set a good example for how COVID-safe cyclists are!

5. What constitutes a local small business? I’ll give broad leeway on this. Frankly most every business (esp restaurants) is in such pain right now, I’m likely to give a lot of slack. I just want you to go out for a ride, stimulate the economy and help keep your neighbors employed. And yes, I’ll allow you to more than one of a local chain if you differentiate the tags — i.e. “#BAFS2021SmallBiz Vigilante Hyattsville” AND “#BAFS2021SmallBiz Vigilante College Park” would each count for a point.

6. Prizes? I’ll buy the top 3 winners a giftcard ($75, $50, $25) to their favorite local business. (Even if it’s not Maryland Meadworks!)

Brought Baja Chicken Wrap, Sun Chips and Mango Magic Smoothie, Pack it in the pannier on the bike then took the picture, ate when I got home, still have the receipt, lol.

1/17/21 – Bird House or Bird Bath

I can’t tell if it’s just in the UK, but February 14-21 is National Nest Box Week, but I’ve also seen it listed as Homes for Birds Week. Fun fact: George Lucas’ (creator of Star Wars) wife commissioned a bird house, which was a 7′ wide reproduction of their Skywalker Ranch residence.

On your ride, find a bird house, bird feeder or a bird bath, snap a pic, and post it here for 1 point. If you capture a live bird on any of those three things, that’ll be 2 points total.

Happy hunting!

2/17/21 find Birdhouse or Birdbath, I did one better and found a Bird Apartment House. If you look at the picture, you’ll see that there are at least three birdhouses inside the outer house. (Doesn’t that deserves extra points)!

2/16/21 – Crown or Mask (with eyeholes)

Mardi Gras, aka Fat Tuesday, is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday. Fun fact: if you want to ride on a Mardi Gras float you must wear a mask. In fact, it is actually illegal to ride one without one!

On your ride, find a crown (that sits on top of your head) or a mask (that has eyeholes). If you find the word, it’ll be 1 point. If you find a likeness, that’ll be 2 points total.

Happy hunting!

We are back from the future. Go tell your old self to buy some TP.

I am sponsoring the Wormhole prize this year again, and recognize Boomer, bikenick as winners of the 2020 edition and SteveO has the OG of Wormholes.

Could we have the #FSWormhole added to the leaderboard?

RULES:

Have you ever bent the spacetime continuum on a ride and wondered how did I get there so fast and yet it seemed slow?

If the concept of time is just something to be toyed with, then this prize is for you!

What’s a wormhole? It’s kinda like you know it when you ridden through it.

******* EDIT *******

I am going to edit this rule from last year: Once a wormhole has been identified, that is it others can go interstellar on it but they won’t get a further point.

CHANGE: Even if it’s identified/claimed by someone else and you ride through it, you can still ### it and gather a point.

The whole point of this side quest is make our connections between places easier, so go on and hypercyclespace your away around.

********************

Claim your spatial discovery on Strava with #FSWormhole and give it NAME (ie: The universe’s most inadvisable wormhole) and describe it here, post photos etc.

We have some previous explored wormholes from the past edition, which if you get to ride them this year you can claim but as always there are extra points for novelty and quality of wormholes.

What makes a quality wormhole? You know it once you ridden through them, if it brings a smile to you face you are doing it right, if it almost kills you talk to Steve.

Ride on,

Filipe

2/15/21 – “St Skeletor’s Day” Subanagram (5 or more letters) or Human Skeleton

Single and/or tired of the commercialism/smoochiness of Valentines Day? Then St. Skeletor‘s Day, celebrated on February 15 since 1998, was made for you! Skeletor – He Man’s archenemy – is the inspiration for the day, and it’s all about anti-love and not doing anything special for anyone.

On your ride, scramble the letters of “St Skeletor’s Day” to come up with a real word that has 5 or more letters, and find that word out in the wild for one point. The alternative for two points is to find a human skeleton likeness, but it has to be more than half of the body including the skull (i.e., not just the skull or a just a hand)
