ParticipantI was riding on Rock Creek Trail last night on the section that goes through the Zoo (the one that they lock up at night) and saw a cop in a SUV on the trail. He said they were closing it up early because there have been some robberies on that part in the evenings.
Just FYI.
Has anybody else heard anything about this?

ParticipantActually, I was concerned about both the safety of the kids and of people biking and running through that section of the trail.
They were running on and alongside of the trail and I know that kids are very unpredictable as to where there will go……….
And the fact that the adult was pretty far away from them and on the phone also concerned me……….she was smiling though, so I guess the phone call wasn’t a crisis…………
I’ve also never seen such young kids on the trail before…………
Sorry if others feel I was judging her too harshly………….I guess I didn’t consider stopping and having a conversation with her to be an option………

ParticipantNot exactly a missed connection, but maybe some missing brain cells.
Today on Rock Creek Trail, I came upon two preschoolers wandering around the trail.
There must be an adult nearby, I thought.
Much further ahead (maybe 50 yards or so) I saw a woman on a cell phone.
After I safely passed the kids I said to her “Um, you might want to supervise them a bit better”
Just giving her some friendly advice………….

ParticipantMy father is 81 and still biking
During most of the year he uses the stationary bike at his gym about 3 times a week.
Over the summer he bikes around town up in the Adirondacks in New York state on a hybrid.
He does weight machines at his gym too.

ParticipantThe hotter and more humid it gets, the more wackos I encounter……….
Was biking this morning on the part of the Rock Creek Trail that goes by the Zoo and I came upon a woman just calmly sitting right on the trail with headphones on.
She said “Hi” to me and I said “Not a good idea to be sitting on the trail”……….
Maybe the heat and humidity just addles their brains or something…………..

ParticipantAs far as that location goes, I bike past there a lot and haven’t had any issues.
But I usually go by there when there aren’t that many people around.
I avoid that area on the weekends, too crowded for me.
I never walk my bike over that bridge, but I do yield to joggers and pedestrians coming the other way, and they seem cool with that.

ParticipantWent down through Rock Creek Park this afternoon.
Beach Drive south of the Park Police station was closed to cars. I went through there cautiously and the creek was like a roaring, muddy torrent. There were some vehicles basically just cleaning up mud and huge sludge puddles. It will probably be re-opened soon.
Rock Creek Trail is pretty messy. The bridge at Pierce Mill is roped off and some parts of the path there were broken up. You can just cross the road tho and go around the party pavilion on the other side of the road and get back on the trail. From there there are a few mud / sludge trail washout parts and then when you get to the next bridge, it’s pretty much blocked with tree limbs and debris. I took a shortcut around that section tho and got back on the trail. More muddy patches esp. right near the Zoo entrance (which was closed).
So I guess it’s kind of doable, but in bad shape.

ParticipantMy favorite entry point is the back way into the Zoo, down Harvard Street.
The only problem is that it’s closed when the Zoo is closed, so then I run across Rock Creek Parkway (can be bad if there’s a lot of traffic).
Check out the DC bicycle map online to see other entry and exit points for the trail.

ParticipantI was walking down 15th today and saw that they have the pavement torn up, up to Swann Street and have paved up to Corcoran.
