ParticipantYeah that Tiagra is maybe good lookin’ in a dark light. Good thing is, a LOT of LBSs will have take off cranks laying around. Check your local racer/tri shops to see what they took off. I picked up a two month old set of Rotor 3Ds for $150. Or your fave LBs probably has something kicking around for dirt cheap

ParticipantYeah. I can’t wait till the CX Freds need new disc brake wheels. Gonna try to score some cheap tubulars!

My commuter (cx/touring bike) was first a cantilever setup (Avid Shorty 4). I spent months tweaking those brakes — I had really poor braking performance. Switching to salmon pads helped, though I would say I never had a great setup. I have talked to others with cantis that had much more positive experiences. I considered buying higher end cantis, but decided instead to switch to TRP mini-v brakes. That was a huge improvement. No need to mess with toe-in to stop the shudder and squealing. Braking performance was much better. They were grabbier than disc, but on the whole this was a huge improvement.
Shorty 4’s are notorious for poor braking. The 6s are a bit better. TRP cantis are very nice and their mini-vs are stellar. I’m still an Avid fan- Ultimates on my CX. My neighbor has Paul Mini Motos. Those are NICE.
I just feel there are some great choices for cantis/v brakes for the same or less money than disc set-ups. And don’t forget the poor showing for CX disc set-ups in Kentucky. Granted that was a bit of an extreme situation, but I’ve never had my cantis so gunked up they stopped working or destroyed the braking surface on my rims.

Oh, I have a spreadsheet.

Fork Offset 52 mm

BB Drop 66
Fork Offset 44
Fork Length 400
HT 91
Wheelbase 1005.3
Standover 769.4So what I can see is more touring/rando geos for the Space horse, and CX geo for the Crosscheck. The lower BB drop on the Spacehorse will feel more stable loaded down with gear. But the Crosscheck will be a bit more nimble. But the Spacehorse comes in that blue….

That was pretty much my take on it
I just have to figure out if the geo is right for me. I’m thinking it’s sorta-kinda close enough to a Cross-Check that I can extrapolate from test riding one.
Check Surly’s and A/C’s websites. I’m pretty sure surly posts the geos on the site and I know A/C does.

Learn me about AC bikes. I’m reaaaaaallly considering a Space Horse.
It’s a really well thought out kinda “do everything” bike. Clearance for big rubber, fender mounts/rack mounts, but best of all are the semi-horizontal dropouts a la old school roadies. This allows running geared or single speed or even internallly geared hubs. Basically the same geo as the Macho Man. And that silvery blue color is teh sex.
I know I come off as a fanboy and I’m ok with that. They put out a serious product with a very good amount of bang for buck. Jeff (the dude who runs A/C) races, throws killer alleycat and CX races, drinks cheap beer, and is just generally a cool cat.

You: The gents on the eastbound scooter on the PA Ave cycletrack about 0710. If you want a ride with a gasoline motor, please use the big wide lanes that are there for those type rides. The way you were weaving, it looked like the additional lane width would have been fully utilized. Thanks!
Motorpacing? I see this on occasion. Best was the guy on the motorized beach cruiser blowing by me up a bridge and all I saw as I crested it was a bunch of stopped cars and a pile of what used to be a beach cruiser straddling the bike lane and car lane.

ParticipantI see it all the time, and finally stopped worrying about it. It makes me kinda bitter when there’s an empty sidewalk 2 feet away, but I feel like I’d make more of a difference if I just banged my head against the wall.
Personally, #iblamebikelanes

ParticipantRun off the road in Miami on the Venetian Causeway. Pouring rain, inattentive driver, really tall curb. In that order.
