No joke- I totally and absolutely know better but I really almost keeled over on Friday 10 miles from home. Same deal- hydrated like mad all day (feeling smug) but ate a grand total of 300 calories all day and then went for a wee 10 mile CX jaunt through LFP in the middle of my 25 mile commute on a pretty hot day. Bonked really really hard after the Hunter Mill climb on the WO&D, limped home and was sick & lethargic most of the weekend. No good.

Can’t speak to the skirt but the first tri I did I wore bike shorts with a stretched waist for the swim… actually I only wore them for part of the swim. Oops.

LFP? We need an acronym guide. Never have I seen so many acronyms for local trails and places — MVT, 4MR, CCT, etc. — than I have since joining this forum. I still have to think a few seconds before I remember each one.

Forgetting to eat? This is not a problem for me.

Careful when talking about going to 29er wheels on a 700c frame. Remember that the rear dropout spacing will be different. MTB=135mm, road=130mm.

Why not consider some custom handbuilt wheels? This is a great investment for any rider. Bill Mould at Spokes is an excellent wheel builder.

How about a messenger bag reflective “tail” with the Bike Arlington logo? It could be hung from a bag, backpack, panniers, seatbag or saddle.

It could be a small one or a big one.

I really enjoy slowing down, allowing the L337’s to pass me, and then safely passing them again on a straightaway. Also, if you are going to pass me at least TRY to keep up a your pace, otherwise it goes yo-yo-esque pretty quickly – i.e. me stopping for reds and then having to pass you again.

The BikeSnob refers to this as “shoaling”. Cat 6 racers group up at red lights, but instead of lining up behind the other riders, they collect like a shoal or horizontal bicycle stalactite of douchebaggery, encroaching further and further into the intersection in some kind of weird game of one-upsmanship, until the light turns green and they all race to the next red light. They are fun to pass but they drive me nuts.

I’d be interested in contributing as well. I’ve been commuting for a few years and I guess I’m kind of a strange animal because I’ve developed strong opinions that are usually different from the norm.

Personally I think commuting is different from other types of utility cycling; commuting to me is more about streamlining your gear and figuring out how to carry as little as possible, rather than trying to figure out how to accommodate large loads.

I will be traveling to Auckland New Zealand at end of week and it is too short notice to get a travel case for my S&S couplered bike. Has anyone got one they would be willing to loan me, from June 29 – July 8? Thanks in advance – Mike Evans, mne.prs@gmail.com.

I only saw your post after-the-fact. I have an S&S case. Do you still need it?

I also have a Tri3Sports case I’d be willing to lend to forum members who are REALLY NICE TO ME*

(* this means you have to buy me a lot of beer at the next forum Happy Hour)

I think the forum kit jersey’s should have “WWDD?” (What Would Dirt Do?) somewhere on them.

    Edit: “jerseys”

Only problem with this plan is people tend to assume “someone else” will always take the initiative then nothing gets done; else it’s always the same folks doing the work every month. The reason the Fri morning club at Swings works is because no one has to do anything; everyone knows the routine.

Exactly. That’s exactly the idea behind the recurring happy hour.

Perhaps we could change the pre-destined places every quarter?

That would be cool to put it up to a quarterly vote, but in the end it always comes down to someone taking the lead. Doing these things by committee always devolves into inaction/indecision. My vote is to let us start with Shirlington on the third Thursdays and get a sticky post put up on the General board.

Remember the “Multi” part of “Multi Use Path”. People use it for strolling, walking, running, teaching the kids to ride, leisure riding and yes, fast road-riding. No one has a moral claim greater than anyone elses; just because roadies are seen as elitist doesn’t mean they don’t have the right to use a MUP for race-training or just posing at being fast.

Now of course they have to do it safely, but it very well may be that the roadies definition of a safe pass and a leisure cyclist’s definition could be very different.

    Here’s a jersey I like . . .

More seriously, the discussion inspires a couple of points:

    1) Managing a custom jersey order is expensive and time consuming. I’ve done it twice, now – never again. I say that mostly in the hope that folks will moderate expectations/demands for what they want (if there is one). $80 is cheap, considering.

    2) Pearl Izumi? Primal? Oh, my children, there are so many better things out there in the world . . . As with bikes, you tend to get what you pay for. If you’ve got the dosh, try something from Castelli or Hincapie’s mid-lines. Pactimo’s jerseys are great, too.

I would definitely be interested in a forum-specific jersey. I’d love to see it peppered with humorous, snarky comments from forum members :) Maybe we could have a contest for the most satiric/ironic/sardonic jersey slogan.

I also second Mark Blacknell’s suggestion of going with a higher quality jersey. If it is a nicer jersey I will be more inclined to wear it…a mediocre one may just sit in the closet, so why save a few bucks on something you won’t wear. I have a Voler jersey that is pretty nice, and a Santini that is very high quality (but kind of scratchy). I’d love a jersey with and MP3 pocket…just sayin’

So, where are we? Any volunteers for this month? Shirlington can be a fallback.

Arider, I thought the plan was just to start with this as a sticky:

53% of respondents indicate they are only interested in a monthly happy hour. The data suggests, I think it was Katherine’s comment, that having happy hours too often might potentially dilute attendance. Based on responses, that is potentially true.

This statement illustrates why we shouldn’t trying to use a poll to determine the optimum locations for get-togethers. The goal is diversity of locations, not drawing the most aggregate attendees.

Put this way, if we have all the happy hours convenient to the most amount of people, then yes you will see dilution in attendance from an over-availability of events. Diversify widely the locations, and it will be more likely that people will only have one event monthly that is convenient for them to attend.

The Cyclist Goofing Off Agenda (CGOA) is an extremely important initiative and well worthy of the amount of thought-power we are putting into it :)

    Edit:
P.S. Rcannon100: I should mention that I didn’t mean to make this sound like I didn’t appreciate your input. I really think the poll you put together was awesome, and the information we’re getting from it is extremely useful. I was so enthused to see people taking this idea and running with it! I guess I was just saying we should be wary of relying solely on the majority opinion.
