ParticipantQuick update: I still plan to shovel on Monday afternoon — and if this forecast holds, I’m going to need all the help I can get. The only change is that I’m now planning to be there starting at 1:00 p.m. Please feel free to stop by any time between then and 6:00 p.m., even if it’s just for a few minutes. Thanks, and hope to see you there.

ParticipantHere is just some of the trash that we picked up in Four Mile Run Park today:
Not pictured: the muddy, abandoned red kids’ bike that someone pulled out the streambed. Seeing that made me sad.
Today I learned:
- Organizers of trash cleanup events should have more trash bags on hand than they think they’ll need.
- Manipulating a trash grabber and an oversize trash bag is awkward when you’re a short person with T-Rex arms, like me.
- When you’re picking up bottles and cans, turn them upside down to empty out all the nasty liquid inside before you put them in your trash bag. Eww.
- The beer-drinking bozos who like to toss their empties at the end of the Four Mile Run Wetlands Trail favor Heineken or Tecate.
- That area has lots of thorny plants. Ow, ow, ow.

ParticipantThat sounds terrifying, ltierstein, especially the brain injury. I’m so sorry this happened to you. I hope you’re able to take it easy and recover fully. Sending healing thoughts.

ParticipantYou: my trusty rear light that got stolen while my bike was parked in Adams Morgan today. Farewell, and thank you for the many safely lit miles. I hope the person who took you (1) needs you, and (2) remembers to actually use you.

ParticipantDumpling ride #3: steamed pork dumplings at Sakuraramen in Adams Morgan.
These were perfectly adequate traditional pork gyoza, although I prefer my own recipe (I use a higher proportion of vegetables, which makes the filling more tender). The best part was actually the dipping sauce, which was lighter and sweeter than most.

ParticipantAll right, I signed up to volunteer at the finish line area. I’d be interested in sharing an Airbnb. I can drive and take three other people plus two other bikes (or three bikes if someone else is bringing a 48cm Renegade that I could borrow for any necessary sleaze rides *cough*reji*cough*). I’m also happy to chip in for the van option.

ParticipantDumpling ride #2: steamed chicken dumplings at Mo:Mo House in Vienna.
The cumin and turmeric flavors in these Nepali dumplings were a nice change of pace from the traditional East Asian dumplings I usually get. Bonus points for friendly service in a cheerfully yellow restaurant located just off the W&OD, next to Pure Pasty and Bikes@vienna. My only complaint is that I wasn’t fond of the restaurant’s incense, which was interfering with my sense of taste.

Coffee and “hunan dumplings” for breakfast
Breakfast dumplings. Strong move. I can see that I’m going to have to up my game.

ParticipantDumpling ride # 1 complete: steamed shrimp dumplings at Pike Kitchen in Rockville.
I’m not going to lie, I’ve had fresher shrimp dumplings. But it was worth the ride to go check out Pike Kitchen, the third and newest of the Asian food halls in the D.C. area. And also to check out the bike infrastructure on Rockville Pike — which appears to consist entirely of “bike may take full lane” signs, on a six-lane arterial with a 40mph speed limit. Thanks but no thanks.

Komorebi awarded the Strava Art prize to herself in a ceremony held earlier today.
Haha. I’d been planning to take myself out of the running if Allan C sponsored the art competition this year, but this works out better. I can’t promise that this year’s prize will be as cool as the ones that Allan C offered in the past, though.

I am not participating this year, and therefore sponsorship of a Strava Art prize is up for grabs.
I’d been wondering about that. I’m happy to take over responsibility for offering the Strava Art prize. I’ll post a new thread soon.

What about cream puffs? They’re dumpling enough that Komo featured them on last year’s dumpling ride, so I think they should count
True, but even I admitted that cream puffs were a bit of a stretch.
If the District Dumplings location in South Arlington had been open by then, we would have stopped there instead.

ParticipantGenius idea, bikedavid! I’ve been on the fence about participating in Freezing Saddles 2019, but I might sign up solely to compete for this pointless prize. Seems like the perfect excuse to check out all of those Rockville dumpling places I haven’t tried yet, and also a good reason to go ride some of the underutilized Fairfax County bike lanes.
