    In terms of which, has anyone here ever seen a police officer give a ticket to someone who rolled a right on red? All of us see cars barely slow down before turning right, yet I cannot ever recall seeing anyone stopped for this behavior.

    Last fall, one of the most egregious right-on-red violations I’ve ever seen: a northbound driver on Quaker Lane rolled a right on red onto Preston Road, cutting off a family — including a baby in a stroller! — who had the “walk” signal to cross Quaker Lane. I was left gaping at this dangerous and rude behavior. And then I heard an extremely satisfying “whoop whoop.” A patrol car was parked at the intersection, and the officer had apparently seen the whole thing. I didn’t stick around to see whether the cop gave the driver a ticket or just a warning, but karmic justice acted swiftly in this particular instance.

    I’m fascinated by the Lego cathedral fundraiser. I can’t wait to go back later and see how much progress has been made.

    A few action shots from our group donation:

    Those of you who didn’t stick around for Chris’s “wait, just one more thing” tour really missed out. We got to see the 7th floor observation deck, wander through the attics, and go outside.

    And we got to stand underneath the West rose window, which might have been my favorite part of the whole tour.

    Thanks again, Chris!

    Thanks for putting together an excellent ride and tour, Chris! Your passion and extensive knowledge really shone through. A++, would do again!

    Mega kudos to everyone who braved cold rain, icy sleet, smelly Anacostia River mud, and tire-eating potholes on today’s Bakeries, Brews, and Booze ride! Thanks for keeping it fun despite the weather. You are all Rule 9 badasses, and I’m proud to have ridden with you.

    Weather update for Sunday’s Bakeries, Brews, and Booze ride: we’ve got the classic good news and bad news. The good news is that the temperatures are likely to be warmer than what the forecasters were predicting earlier this week. The bad news is that it’s likely to start raining in the afternoon.

    The forecast for tomorrow looks pretty dreadful, but yes, I’m still crazy enough to ride. Bring your rain gear and whatever extra clothes, socks, or gloves you need to be comfortable at the stops. This is a no-hypothermia-allowed event.

    This shorter route we’ll be using is at https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29419142.

    Bravo and well said, ChristoB50! You just made one of the most effective arguments for e-bikes I’ve ever seen. Congratulations on the many personal achievements, and thank you for all the ways you’ve given back to the community — ranging from the epic snow shoveling to the many, many bags of trash removed to the willingness to jump in and organize your first group ride.

    I also echo what Casey said: BPAC is a great way to get involved in more advocacy, education, or event planning. Hope to see you at the next meeting.

    Sunday is the last day I can lead this ride before the end of Freezing Saddles, so I’m inclined to go ahead despite the forecast. Depending on the weather, I might cut out the middle third of the ride — i.e., after visiting Meadworks, we’ll go straight to Sangfroid Distilling and Streetcar 82. Bring your rain gear. And if the forecast makes you change your mind about coming, no worries.

    If the forecast takes a turn for the worse and I need to cancel the ride entirely, I’ll post an update here no later than 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night.

    It’s so awesome that you’re doing this! I took a tour years ago, but I’m looking forward to the ride and to learning more about the cathedral.

    Due to Saturday’s forecast, I’m rescheduling the Bakeries, Brews, and Booze ride to Sunday, March 3. A Sunday ride sadly means that Shortcake Bakery won’t be open, so I’m pushing the start time back by half an hour and recommending that people bring snacks. Otherwise, the route and stops remain the same. See details below. If you’re planning to imbibe on the rescheduled ride, please let me know. Thanks.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    In conjunction with rumipumi (aka Mrs. Maryland Meadworks), I’m organizing a bakeries, brews, and booze ride on Sunday, March 3. All are welcome to join.
    The plan:
    — Meet at 10:30 a.m. at Velo Cafe in DC, purveyor of local coffee, Acme Pie, and other excellent baked goods.
    — Roll out at 11:00 a.m. and take the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail to Maryland Meadworks.
    — Do a loop up through U.Md., along Lake Artemesia, and back down to Hyattsville.
    — Visit Sangfroid Distillery (just opened December 2018; $10/person for tour and tasting) and Streetcar 82 Brewery (first deaf-owned brewery on the east coast). Neither place serves food, but Vigilante Coffee and Franklin’s are nearby if people need nibbles.
    — Since there’s nothing like pie to soak up that alcohol, roll back along the ART to Dangerously Delicious Pies on H Street.
    — Return to Velo Cafe.
    The route is about 37 miles, mostly trails but also some roads, at https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29290890. Social pace (12-15 mph), no drop. Nondrinkers are welcome too.
    Directions to the start: the Velo Cafe at District Hardware is located at 730b Maine Ave SW, in the Wharf. The nearest metro is Waterfront. If you can’t find street parking near the Wharf, it’s pretty easy to park at Hains Point and bike over.
    If you’d like to join us along the way, let me know and I’ll see if I can get my Garmin LiveTrack working.
    Depending on your stomach/liver capacity, you might be able to score points for four separate pointless prizes: coffee, pastries, beerneuring, and spiriteuring.
    If you think you’d like to imbibe, please PM me or respond on this thread so that I can let the good people at Maryland Meadworks, Streetcar 82, and Sangfroid know how many people to expect.
    Bring snacks, money, and a lock. And a metro card if there’s a chance you might want to metro home.
    I’m planning to be there for yoga. I also have an extra, still-in-the-shrinkwrap yoga mat that I can bring if anyone wants to borrow it.
    We still have a tie for first place for the Queen of the Trail. Josephine is out of town this weekend so it’s a great weekend to gain some points on her.
    Oh no! I better bank some points before everyone passes me this weekend.
    On Friday night, someone left a e-scooter on the ramp leading up from the MVT to the 14th Street bridge. The scooter, being a particularly dastardly sort, then apparently decided to lie down in the middle of the trail, so that it could more easily camouflage itself and then jump out to bite unwary trail users. I eventually convinced the scooter that the somewhat overgrown grassy median strip would be an even better hiding place.
    Perhaps one of the most blatantly poor parkings of an abandoned scooter I’ve seen — ALMOST dead centered on the Potomac Yard Trail, ALMOST fully perpendicular to the trail traffic — and just 3 feet away from a ready-made, ideal scooter parking spot!
    A belated thank you for moving this scooter. I saw it on my way home that night. That section of the trail isn’t well-lit, so there’s a good chance I would have run headlong into the scooter if you hadn’t moved it.
    Brilliant! And thank you in particular for taking the time to pick up all the broken glass. You probably saved a bunch of cyclists from getting flats, and a bunch of dogs from getting cuts in their paws.
