Sorry to hear the news, Tantrix, that’s disappointing. If the bike was stolen from the racks near the Metro entrance, and if you haven’t already, please file a report with Metro Transit Police – 202-962-2121. It may not get your bike back, but it’s important for us to track thefts so we can best plan for more secure bike parking in the future. Thanks,

I’m with Liz – I use “RunMeter” app on my iPhone. Seems pretty similar to CycleMeter – you can set up any number of “sports” like cycling, running, etc. and it’ll adapt accordingly. E.g., when running it reports speed as Minutes per Mile, and when biking it’s MPH. You can set it up to sync to your calendar too. One thing I really like is you can set it up to stop counting time if it senses you haven’t moved for like 30 seconds – accounts for stop lights, or breaks, etc.

It’s probably not good for training, but I like to use it mostly for fun, or if I ever get back from a ride and think, “I wonder how far/fast I just went?”

Very cool, thanks for the map. I’ve never tried this route. But to echo PotomacCyclist, this route bypasses only 1 of the 2 crossings to get you from MVT to Memorial Bridge, and I think it forces you to cross Washington Blvd twice, right?

And the second crossing – just at the top of your map – is the one where you have to guess at whether the cars are going straight up to the circle, or bearing gently right and smack towards you. This one is particularly hard at night or in the winter, in my experience.

Intriguing… can you post a map of the route from MVT to Memorial Bridge by going under the Humpback Bridge?

Those two crossings are incredibly scary, and they both deserve at minimum lots more signage and blinking lights. Cars are easily going 60+ MPH along there. A long-term solution is probably grade separation somehow.

I try to avoid it, and use either 14th St. bridge or the ped bridge at Rosslyn to cross from Arlington to DC.

For hot-weather riding, I actually forego socks altogether and ride in sandals with a heel strap. I know, I know, not close-toed and everything, but when it’s hot like this, the ventilation is much appreciated.

    Stay cool out there.

Yes, the bike valet is the ballpark’s best kept secret. It’s the easiest and cheapest way to get to/from the park. You can leave your helmet strapped to your bike too, and no lock is required. It is free, but I usually tip the valets $1 per bike.

P.S. I also like the Veitch > Key Boulevard route. Just be careful for car drivers who think it’s safe to pass while dodging roundabouts :).

JeffC- you’re right, I very much understand why you want to avoid that section. I ride the Custis regularly, and I know well how busy it gets with pedestrians, joggers, bikers, etc., especially at rush hours! I’m just saying that from a long-term perspective, it’s good that our region has such strong demand for bike/ped infrastructure. Good luck with the new route!

This thread is something of a good sign… a good, legitimate discussion about how to avoid a dedicated bike path because traffic is too heavy! From the long view – this is a good problem to have.

F K’d O-a-W R-Ws are also easily spotted by their lack of practical things like a) lights, b) locks, and c) bags/racks/transporting capacity. It’s just a different kind of riding – pure sport vs. sporty transportation.

Dang, I was on my way over to join you all, but two sequential flat tires on the Mt. Vernon trail last night prevented me. I finally emerged from Revolution Cycles with extra tubes and a kevlar tire at 8. Next time!
