ParticipantCongrats Ann, awesome post! Inspiring! Wish I could join you. I’m up for a ride in the future. I’m afraid I won’t be able to keep up, plus the wife is out of town this weekend and I’m stuck babysitting :p

ParticipantYea I was talking about the DC area. Something to keep me busy until my move to Norfolk. Thank you!

ParticipantI’m getting the bell. For sure. After riding up and down MVT the other day I got tired of calling and that was on a week day. It wasn’t that I was too tired, it just got really annoying. Especially when you call and the person is an “HW”. There were also a few blind turns and I just felt funny shouting, biker coming around! or whatever I should say. I starting laughing because I’ve never narrated my actions before.
A few non callers passed me. I didn’t mind too much, but at the same time they kind of scared the crap out of me. Here I am riding into the wind by myself, haven’t seen a person in 2 miles, head is down just chugging away and all of a sudden there goes a damn peloton going about 30mph. I didn’t have enough time to react until they we already past me. Not a word out of any of them was said. I hope they were more considerate of the day walkers and sight see’ers

ParticipantThats kind of odd you’re getting blow back. Maybe its because of your cleats? Or lack of space to keep your gear? Most places in this area are all about alternative ways to work, even military. Opens parking spaces and what not.

ParticipantA donation coming your way. Good luck!

ParticipantThanks, I love chocolate milk!!! Good to hear about the saddle. I was a little worried that maybe it didn’t fit my sit bones. It’s a new seat and I was told it’ll take around 100mi to break in? That and 2 weeks for my back side to toughen up. Feels like I just rode a horse across the pony express.

I will say that if you CAN bend it back with a pair of needlenose you’ve got bigger issues. Cassettes are fairly stout. They pretty much have to take a good whack.
Good news then. I wasnt sure how rugged a cassette could be. It must be a trim/adjustment as you say. I havent tried bending any of the teeth.

Are you 100% sure it’s a bend? Sometimes the ramp design of cassette sprockets make them look as if they’re wrong, when in reality they’re correct.
I did noticed some ramp design. I dont want to say 100% because of how unfamiliar I am with troubleshooting BUT when I shift into those gears there is excessive noise. The noise sounds like the chain and teeth aren’t agreeing with each other and it only happens when that part of the cassette is in the chain.

ParticipantNice! I have yet to go 35 downhill haha! I dont get much of a clear break away though. Too messy and bumpy near Suitland parkway. Congrats!

ParticipantHi CA2DC, welcome to the forum and welcome in advance to DC. Im not an expert DC commuter, but I think I can get you going in the right direction. There should be plenty of others here to help you. Until then Ill do my best.
I think the first answer to your question could help with your other answers. http://www.capitalbikeshare.com/ I dont personally use this but there is plenty of info on their site. Its set up so you can grab a bike, ride it to wherever, and drop it off (providing there is a station around). You can sign up for a few days, weeks or a year.
You can take a bike on the metro, BUT only during NON-rush hour times (7-9) and (4-6).
DC is pretty flat. Nothing like CA.
You can google bike routes for the area, others may have specific streets for you. I would say DC is very bike friendly compared to other large cities. It just depends where you are in the city. WABA has a route planner http://www.waba.org/resources/maps.php.I hope this helps you out. Enjoy DC while your here.

ParticipantI think I may sign up for this. Since i’m not running the half marathon in VA beach and I am staying in the area, this would be a great goal to take its place.

ParticipantWelcome Annie, acc is right. Your best bet would be going to a local shop. I’ve recently gone through, and somewhat still am, going through the “new to biking” stage. I made the mistake of buying something before I knew what I wanted. Now I have TWO bikes
