@@Jsnyd – keep at it, man. Over time, I’ve found S. Capitol, MLK, and Minnesota Ave. better than they used to feel. Also, just to pitch a program I believe in: if you’ve got the time, would you be interested in helping with WABA’s East of the River efforts? http://www.waba.org/blog/2011/04/2011-east-of-the-anacostia-program-update/
Yea, I’m interested. What kind of help would you need?

There’s lots of good riding out that way once you clear the obstacles. I’m still waiting for other riders to let me in on any strategies.
Haha, good luck. I live in Suitland near the Naylor rd metro and have no clue how to get around the area north of me. I am a little nervous riding anywhere around here, but once I get on the road some of my nerves settle. It is NOT biker friendly around here. I agree that there is some great riding once you break through. I plan on taking a trip South to Leonardtown maybe this weekend. I may take 301 or 5. I drove down on 5 not to long ago and it seem pretty decent after you get past a few sketchy roads near Branch Ave. Once you get far enough down you can turn right on Thompson Cornner and it’s nothing but farms and open fields, with nice rolling plains and clean paved roads. I think the St. Mary’s Century is around there because I saw a few share the road signs.

ParticipantWith that being said. I went to Indian Head Rail Trail this morning, away from the city. Breathing was great! I could breathe in deep, smell more the pavement and there was even a cool breeze.

ParticipantI thought about going out today. But then the wife woke up late and I was stuck babysitting. I think deep down I was looking for an excuse. When I go out to ride I generally go for a workout and get ready for my longer ride late August. I’m just worried I’m doing more harm them good once I’m huffing and puffing.

ParticipantI heard U locks are the best. I don’t have a lock myself but I would imagine that they are. They are a little wide for bolt cutters so it would be difficult for someone to break it. Just make sure you lock the frame. I overheard a lady in a bike shop looking for a new bike after she got her bike stolen. She said it was locked and couldn’t understand how the lock and front tire were still attached to the bike rack but the rest of the bike was gone. Then she was filled in on a little secret with front tires

ParticipantI would like to help out, but I may be out of town then. Is there a cut off point for volunteers?

ParticipantNot sure, but I can imagine that constant exposure to vehicle exhaust could eventually hurt. Seeing as carbon monoxide is toxic. I would guess that the first sign of poisoning would be heavy fatigue. Once that happens you might want to stay off the road for a few weeks. There has been quite a few air quality alerts in this area. I try not to stay out too long on those days. They are harmful to the young and elderly and people with respiratory issues. I have a weather channel app on my iphone and that will give me a heads up on the weeks alerts and a fair judgment of weather.

ParticipantHaven’t had the chance to ride into Arlington yet, but I don’t live to far from the Stadium. Traffic is VERY congested especially after the game. So congested that I don’t think there would be an issue as long as you can do some weaving at slow speeds. May I suggest taking M street on your way out? To get across the river I take 12th street Bridge. Not sure what would be best for you since you can go north and have your pick between bridges.

Personally I always check my blindspot while driving. I always check while biking too (because not to seems dangerous). To me calling a pass would is equivalent if we honked everytime we passed someone while driving.
When we pass in a vehicle, we assume the person we are about to pass has seen us in either 3 of the mirrors they are required to keep an eye on. Plus we then need to signal our pass using our turn signals (to me, using a turn signal is the same as calling a pass). Cars have windows, radios and passengers. That’s mainly why we use visual aids to signal on the road. Bikes, as we all know, have neither of those unless you wear headphones. An audible signal is just good practice for everyone. Especially when calling out to those who seem to not be on the trails that often. With the more seasoned riders, calling is just a courteous gesture. We are all on the trail for just about the same reason. Bottom line is. We enjoy it. So why fight each other and be just the slightest bit rude or inconsiderate? I dont care if people call when they pass me, but It puts me at ease when I KNOW someone is about to pass me. It’s a multi use trail open the the public, not a grand tour.

ParticipantYea I’m trying to keep that part out of the applications. It may have slipt into one, cant remember. I havent had to apply for a job in 9 years so I hope I dont screw up to many.

I think he is talking about the, why dont people signal when passing, post. The tail end is a little uncomfortable. Trolling should be left on youtube. We are all friends here!
