ParticipantWhile heading into work this past week I past 2 cops in Anacostia/Suitland area and then another not far away. We were grinding up a good size hill and had a laugh with a few of them. I’m sure they aren’t to happy being exposed like they are in rough neighborhoods, but I like it. It’s more of a personable approach to the communities and gives them a few miles in our shoes that they may acknowledge in the future.

Do they make panniers rated for submersion? The Paint Branch trail had water up to my knees under the Metro/CSX tracks.
I’m going with Dirt. Ortlieb. What a coincidence that revolution cycles(Clarendon) have two or three pairs in stock! I sold a pair to a guy last week just before the storms. I’m sure he’s happy.

ParticipantI’ve commuted for most of it. Luckily I get to stay away from Alexandria. Today I drove in though. I just got tired of being cold and wet. I wear normal cycling gear with arm warmers. I Am on the hunt for a good jacket though. Maybe just a gore or pearl Izumi rain coat.

ParticipantI almost got hit at this same location by a giant beer truck that right hooked me coming from the center lane. I was crossing Lynn going west towards the custis. I had the walk signal as I was approaching the intersection. I looked to see if there were cars turning and kept moving. No turn signal from the truck (that I noticed). I came inches from the grill of the truck. Didn’t fall though. Luckily it was raining hard enough the I may have hydro planed around him.

ParticipantJust wanted to update this quick. I found a job at revolution cycles in Clarendon as a sales associate. It’s a lot of fun and a lot to learn. I’m really enjoying working here. Great people and some really nice toys to play with.

I use the reflective straps many times per day.
I distribute them too. I’ve been giving them away to the ninjas that I meet on the trail. In fact I got my first “Oh shit, Not you again” from a runner who refuses to wear reflective gear on the path in the dark.
Haha! I started commuting at night and see the same thing… or not. Then you get the opposite. Saw a runner last night carrying a full size flashlight.

I was out around 245 to go to the grocery store – I figured it would be crowded, but that bike parking would be easier than usual. I was correct. Rain and wind kept me cool coming home up the hill, too.
The heat didnt get to you? Thats surprising :p

ParticipantI’ll chime in. Sorry if it’s long, I’m venting. I was riding just the other day around 6pm (I should know better than to be out at that time if I can help it) on a loop from Clarendon and back (From Suitland) via M st, MVT and Custis trails. I got caught behind this young lady, around my age, with no consideration for anyone on the trail. I noticed about 90% of people with the same mind set. I was blown away! Eventually I get the chance to pass, so I take it and leave her and my frustration behind me. Then I am slowed down by a guy in front of me cruising on his MTB/Commuter. That’s cool, no problem. The bridge that shoots across GW parkway was right in front of us anyway so I hit a granny gear and enjoy the incline. Out of nowhere, just before the sharp left 180 turn, here comes said young lady who passes both the commuter and I with no thoughts about who may or may not be coming around the other side. Fine, go for it, I’m hanging with my commuter friend and he just gave you the same head shake I did. There’s still 3 miles of an incline if you plan to follow Custis. No… She doesn’t. She gets to the other side of the bridge, turns right up the next short incline and stops to turn around…. Are you kidding me? I think we should all be more friendly and thoughtful. When I say “we” I mean everyone else other than the ones in here. Just because you’re trying to go fast and are maybe on the MVT all the time, doesn’t mean you’re an expert and are better than others on the trail.
