Hey guys, I’m Ben Johnson on Strava. I was at the Happy hour last night and met Bryan and “Fast Friendly Guy” (can’t remember his real name) :)

I found our Strava team 10 club, and put a post with some name ideas. I’ll go ahead and post them here too, but I do like “No pun in 10”:

    Team 10 speed
    Team 10 degrees
    Saddles up
    Cyclepaths
    Tour de freeze
    Vicious Cycle

    That IS his real name

Is it possible to be getting individual points here https://www.freezingsaddles.com/leaderboard/individual_text but not get on a team?

Yes, prior to team assignments, the leaderboard is just anyone who joins the public BAFS 2018 Strava group. If you think you registered and did everything you needed to, you should PM cvcalhoun

Nothing you have to do now, we’re working on getting the teams straightened out.

So I’ll start with the quick bio – I’m Jon. This is my fourth or fifth BAFS, I forget. I have never missed a day, although I will this year due to a wedding in Australia. Me and Steve O started the FSLNHPP (Freezing Saddles Last Night Hains Point Party) which you should all put on your calendars now – On the last day of the competition we meet up at Hains Point around 8pm and ride laps until midnight. It’s one of the best parts of this whole thing.

I live in DC and the bulk of my riding is close to my house. I want to win #beerneuring this year, but Sunyata is a fierce competitor and it’s going to take a lot to do it.

So, let me know what you all want to get out of this. It’s definitely more fun if we do it together.

    Your office sucks

Yeah, this has been a really rough start to the year for people trying to be outside.

The rest of the competition will definitely be all sunshine and puppies, though.

I think yesterday at least tied the record for consecutive days Dulles was below freezing.

Rules question: do rides to breweries outside of the area count? I have a trip across the other pond next month, and it looks like Tokyo now has a bike share AND a new Hitachino Nest brewery…

I’m not in charge of the rules, but I’m pretty sure it’s all good as long as you bike there. I hope it counts too as we’re going to be in the same situation in February.

    #1: Atlas

This was a Damn Good IPA, a collaboration with someone I’ve forgotten. Atlas is my favorite DC brewery for beer – there are other breweries I like visiting better, but Atlas has the best beer. The Damn Good was not bad. Wife and I discussed signing the kids up for BAFS next year – Gremlin 2 rode from our house to Atlas then back to Brookland Pint for dinner (though I have to go get her bike from there tomorrow morning, she didn’t quite make the full round trip).

It makes sense to do it by day rather than ride – for example, on Tuesdays and Thursdays I go to the gym at the crack of dawn before the family is awake. During Freezing Saddles, I CaBi home. It’s 0.7 miles. Then, on most Tuesdays and Thursdays, I take the kids to school (5 mile round trip) and pick them up (same). So, yes, I did do a ride that was super short, but that’s because it’s faster than walking, and those 0.7 miles add up (to maybe 10 miles per year!).

Unexpected but totally obvious in hindsight – now that there’s no derailleur cable on the left, my Moose Mitt doesn’t stay in place on that side. I think I’m going to need to do some sewing.

Coffee club is fair game. But if y’all go to the same place every week, then only your first visit counts.

Luckily I think Swings opens before BAFS is over so I’ll get at least two…

#FS2018coffeeride #1 – A Baked Joint. This is easy because it’s Friday Coffee Club, but no one said it had to be hard.
