Actually, one of the reasons I ride is so that I can continue to drink Two Hearted and Racer 5 and DC Brau Corruption at the rate to which I’m accustomed.

The low point was getting a wheel caught in the bike traps on 9th St near Mt Vernon Square and falling. Nothing serious – embarrassment and a sweet bruise on my leg – but it wasn’t any fun. The high point was probably the first time I took the long way in to the office and, while riding past the water on Hains Point, I realized that I had just doubled the length of my commute, on purpose, and was really enjoying it.

I’m not sure how many miles I’ve done. On a normal day, it’s about 7 miles round trip. On Tuesdays when I do our CSA pickup, it’s 10. On days I can do the long way one or both directions, it’s 10-14 miles. I miss less than one day a week. So, however many miles that is. Nowhere near the miles that many of you do, but way more than I did the year before (zero).

I’m definitely in better shape – I had been running before the kids were born, and my last 10K I did in just under an 8 minute pace (like 7:58, but still), and then I had foot surgery, and then kid #1, and I haven’t been able to run much since then. This is great because my commute takes about the same time on Metro or on bike, but on the bike I’m exercising. I’d look fantastic if I could cut back on the strong IPAs.

I have those SPD pedals with the plastic platform rim around it (don’t know the actual term for that), so I can either use road shoes or hiking boots without changing the pedals.

If someone DOES know what those pedals are called, please share – I’m thinking about ditching the toe cages for real pedals, and this sounds like exactly what I want.

Interestingly enough, the driver in the lane closest to me had waved me on. I’m going to have to make adjustments to my assumption model with regards to obtaining eye contact or at least some level of awareness of all drivers involved.

That’s something my mom drilled into my head as I was learning to drive – watch out for courtesy accidents. When someone waves you on, it means THEY aren’t going to kill you. They aren’t speaking for everyone else. I joke about how cautious my mom is on the road, but I can’t count how many times something she told me years ago has kept me out of an accident.

Glad you’re okay. Hope your bike is, too.

TheClymb has deals on Chrome backpacks again – $70 for a Falcon, $60 for a Romer. If you want one, let me know and I’ll send you an invite to the site so I get the $10 referral.

I changed my first flat at home. I’ve since done it on the road (like outside the Continental, for example), but I’m glad the first one was in the privacy and comfort of my living room.

Let me know when the software is updated, I’ll see if I’m still getting my issues. Thanks for looking into it.

I didn’t ride, but I went to DCCX. It was pretty awesome and makes me want to by a CX bike and try it out. Don’t tell my wife.

Ha, I tried to edit that last post to change “define” to “defined”, and I get this error:
Uncaught TypeError: Cannot call method ‘getElementsByTagName’ of null, vbulletin_quick_reply.js line 11. I get that same error trying to use the Reply button at the bottom of the screen.

Definitely good to meet everyone. I’m so terrible with names – I didn’t even get the name of the guy who led me back through Georgetown without even getting me killed by a cabbie. Thanks again.

In somewhat related news, my front tire was way low when I got home (in addition to the back one that flatted on 34th as I was on my way to Rosslyn), so I may have a slow leak. I put air in it last night and it still feels okay, but I haven’t put weight on it yet. Georgetown roads are fired.
