By the sounds of it, it’s totes OK to park down at the point and for us to be riding around there that time of night?
Every year I’ve been surprised at:
- How little attention the Park Police pays to us
- How many people are down there at 1130PM
- How little attention they pay to us, too
The only living thing that seems to have thought we were odd was that curious trash panda that one year.

ParticipantI will toast you from my couch with whatever good drugs they give me for my foot. After my wife’s birthday, this is the top of my list of “things I’m mad to be missing while I’m laid up”.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery – thought it sounds like time is simply what is needed, no rushing.
Did they say anything about what movement may have caused this during your dismount? I’m assuming just the shocked/alarmed/tensed/stressed leaping from the bike, but was curious if there was a particular thing that could be identified as the culprit. No one has speculated as to what might have caused it. After the MRI Sunday, I have an appointment on Monday with the ankle specialist who will do the surgery – hoping he’ll be able to shed some light.

ParticipantI’m having my Achilles repaired on Tuesday and I’m supposed to be on the couch with my foot up for the next two weeks, so unfortunately we won’t be able to come. I’ll be reaching out to someone to help with a couple prizes (as soon as I figure out what I’m awarding).

ParticipantIs the route set yet? Just curious where it will be going. I won’t be back on a bike by then, but hope it’s a big success

ParticipantMy Achilles surgery is scheduled for lunchtime the day of FSLNHPP. As much as I hate to miss the best part of BAFS, I think it’s in the best interests of my long-term health (and biking ability) to sit this one out. I trust Steve O and the rest of you make it another great event. I’ll be with you in spirit!

ParticipantUpdates – daughter had 2 root canals this morning. Apparently she was a model patient, the dentist wishes all the 8-year-olds he works on were like her. So far, so good.
I saw the ortho this morning. Unless there is something crazy in the MRI this weekend, likely to have surgery early next week. I’m encouraged by the recovery timeline – it’s faster than Dr Google lead me to believe. Assuming surgery next week, I should be able to walk with a boot the first week of April and walk normally around May 15. I don’t know if that means I can bike to Bike to Work Day, but I’m hopeful.

I think there’s a solution: can you fit on the back of the long tail?
Fit? Yes. But you’d need a very small person with a very strong core and quads of steel to be able to pull me while not massively exceeding the longtail’s weight limit

ParticipantThe short notice I could have dealt with, it’s combining it with a non-weight-bearing leg that puts it out of reach

ParticipantI can’t make your happy hour, but best of luck on your new adventure. It sounds awesome.

ParticipantI could really use a hand tricycle until my Achilles is weight bearing

You should come down and play host, like Sarah Bee did the year she injured herself.
I”d like to do that. Just need to work out some logistics. It sucks that I likely won’t even be able to DRIVE for 6 weeks and the hand powered recumbent trikes are like $4000. I really think that should be covered by health insurance in cases like these.

ParticipantDay 2 update – Gremlin 2 is in good spirits. She is upset she’s missing her first soccer tournament of the season this weekend, but not in any pain (which is amazing). I am already getting cabin fever from rolling around the house on a knee roller and am already googling “hand powered recumbent trike”. I’m not in any pain, either, which is entirely weird.
Today will be only the third day of BAFS I’ve missed since I started in year 2, and the other two were while we were flying to and from Australia and it was literally impossible to get a ride in.
So, could have been way worse. Thanks for all the well-wishes.

What a frightening story to read and imagine going through… glad you’ve got a tough one there, and hopefully that also means getting back in the saddle for both of you once (hopefully speedy) healing allows…
Yeah, she’ll definitely be back on her bike. She’s mostly just ticked she has to take a few weeks off playing soccer. And I’m trying to figure out how to do my job without my bike for the next however many weeks…
