Jon had a good activity once that was a scribble around his house while he slept with a GPS on.
Funny you should say that – earlier this week from my vantage point stuck on the couch, I saw a guy ride past the house with a BAFS ankle thingy on and wished I was Strava-ing so I could check the flyby and see who it was

ParticipantTo be clear – it doesn’t matter what individual devices do, it matters what Strava reports to the BAFS website through their API. This has been an awful lot of discussion over something no one has researched. But the bottom line is that integrating weather into the official scoring is unlikely to be feasible unless we have more volunteer coders.

ParticipantI guess my broader point is that bringing weather into the official scoring is going to be a lot more technically difficult than the current system. We small group of volunteers struggle to maintain the site as is. We’d run a very real risk of the scoring system going down for days at a time.

I’m fairly certain all devices differentiate between active riding (moving) and stopped time. I know Strava shows it that way.
Devices do but not sure it’s reported consistently through the API. I haven’t researched this, though

I’ve sometimes thought that time instead of miles is more in the spirit of FS. An hour outside in the cold rain is just as hard and miserable for a slow rider as a fast one. Maybe worse, since they don’t generate as much internal heat.
Agree in principle, but this may be technically difficult based on how people save their rides. I know some people ride to work, turn off the gps, then turn it on to ride home. Does this give them 8 hours in the saddle? I’m not sure, but it might throw things off enough that we can’t use this for scoring.
But even if we don’t use it for scoring, I really liked seeing the weather for when I rode. The plan is definitely to have a replacement for next year, regardless of how it’s used.

Team 3 is sending over their bad hombres, I’ve cleaned us back up and we’re back at ten law-abiding riders. LSG is the worst!
You’re still showing 11 on the leaderboard. Can you tell me which one isn’t an official member so I can clean out the database?

ParticipantMorning! Your team is showing 11 players on the scoreboard – can you please make sure only the 10 authorized players are part of your Strava team until at least after happy hour?

For me, I was saddened we lost the weather related stats mid-FEB.
The BAFS web team was pretty disappointed about this, too. It’s a fair bit of work to replace the weather API we lost, and no one had the time to do it. It’s definitely high on the list for next year, as it definitely adds to the competition, whether or not official points depend on it.

ParticipantWe could go the NASCAR route and take the top 8 teams and reset their points to zero with 2 weeks to go. We could have an independent commission rank the teams based on non-mileage factors and have head-to-head playoffs in March. Teams in 4 divisions and the division winners go head to head at the end. The possibilities are endless.

It can have some predictive value, but it is by no means a guarantee. (I think I ended up within about 20 miles of what I rode in last year’s FS overall, even though looking at what I rode week to week is highly variable.)
Although you (like me) are primarily a transportational cyclist. Typically more rides, but shorter. Less likely to go out for 50 mile rides on the weekends. I think part of the problem is trying to make this fun and encouraging for riders like you and me, riders like Bob James, newbie riders who mothball the bike November-May, and all the other types out there. The ten point bonus for me is a huge motivator, but if I typically did 300 miles a week, and it was 27 degrees on a Sunday and sleeting, I’d more than likely be on the couch.
I don’t really have a point here except that it’s complicated.

However, I don’t really care and will just ride my bike no matter what the rules are.
This is mostly true for me, too, although I didn’t manage to hit the cap once this year. That’s mostly due to a combination of being busy at work and being in peak “the kids have lives now but can’t get anywhere on their own yet”.

ParticipantAnecdotally, the mileage cap made a lot of people ride less, which was not the intention. And it didn’t make for an exciting finish to the competition, which WAS the intention.
In theory I like regional teams. However, they work much better for people who live further from DC. I was on a DC team one year and we all had like 3 mile commutes. We did well in terms of having a lot of people riding every day, but we weren’t even close to competitive overall.
As to calculating the scores if we didn’t have the cap – that’s going to be misleading, as many people stopped riding once they hit 100 miles. Probably still worth figuring, but I don’t think it will tell us a whole lot.

ParticipantBummed I couldn’t make it out, but at least I have a good excuse. And awesome turnout. We’ll have to beat it next year
