ParticipantI was just going to say, a mom from my kids’ school was hit at 1st and L taking the kids home from school on the longtail about a year ago. Everyone was ok, but that area sucks. I think the only solution is to put red/green turn arrows for both right and left turns. It’s the only way to get drivers to stop running people over

ParticipantUgh, that sucks. Glad it sounds like it went as well as it could have.
How long are you off the bike? Tuesday was my first 10 mile bike day since early March. Recovery sucks.

ParticipantNot to worry, DDOT has plans to talk about possibly adding some paint somewhere to calm traffic on that block by 2022. Now we just have to wait through 37 public meetings where the same 11 NIMBYs will screech about parking, and then DDOT will scrap the plans. Everyone wins!

ParticipantI RODE A BIKE!

Not a long ride. It was tiring and my right foot is the one I push off with, so having that leg still weak from surgery and months of not being used makes it tough. But I rode a real bike outside after 96 days of not riding and it was awesome.

ParticipantThat is the ugliest dog you’ve ever posted, rcannon100.

ParticipantNon-biking update: Gremlin 2 got whacked in the face with a soccer ball again. Teeth seem fine.

ParticipantRecovery update: I WALKED TODAY! Not very far, but this is the first time since March 8th that I’ve walked without crutches or a boot. It’s an exciting day. I’m probably 3-4 weeks out from starting to bike again.

ParticipantNow you’re making me miss Dave and extended arguments with someone I largely agree with.
jrenaut
ParticipantFirst, yes, absolutely.
Second, though, it’s much more complicated. Speed cameras and automated ticketing can’t be attached to a driver – just a car. So automated enforcement penalties can only be collected by 1) booting or 2) reciprocity at tag renewal. I’d love to see more booting, and don’t see why this can’t happen. But the reciprocity is much tougher.
And as much as I want to revoke licenses – some people can’t survive without driving. Our transit system is so bad that many people simply can’t live their lives without driving. I don’t want those people to lose their livelihood for parking tickets.
And even for egregious speeding violations – we design roads as highways and then expect a speed camera to keep drivers in line? What if suspending a license for a few speeding tickets, even egregious ones, means the driver loses their job and then their home? I just don’t think an equitable solution can be to suspend all these licenses.
We need better transit. We need narrower roads. We need to charge market rates for parking. All of these things get people out of cars an onto buses and trains (and hopefully bikes, because bikes rule).

ParticipantWherever Dave is, I hope he’s laughing at the ghost bike they’re going to put up for his ghost bike.
I sent another letter to the Mayor, my councilmember, and the at-large councilmembers, asking them what they’re doing about DC’s unsafe streets. I urge all of you to do the same. If you don’t live in DC, write to your own elected officials – I’m sure there’s an unsafe street near you that they’re ignoring.

IIUC Au has generally low bike mode share – more like the USA than any other western industrialized country. It may take some doing to get the constituency for mass provision of protected bike lanes there.
Melbourne is an absolutely lovely city with tons of bike infrastructure and no hills. It suffers greatly from the state’s mandatory helmet law, however. The bike path that follows the Yarra River right into downtown is beautiful.

Stupid question- what’s an LPI?
Sorry, not a stupid question at all. Leading Pedestrian Interval. It’s when the pedestrians get the walk signal before cars get the green – gives pedestrians (and in DC, cyclists) time to get out in front so they’re visible to turning drivers, etc.
