ParticipantI’ll be there! Thanks to all the FS volunteers! I probably covered an extra 100 miles this winter because of you.

ParticipantI just noticed this thread. I had one crash on Feb 4. My first ride post-blizzard without snow tires. Ice. I don’t crash often so hopefully I won’t win this particular contest.

ParticipantNice to see people were riding today. Does everyone have snow tires?

ParticipantGo team 9! It was great to meet you at the happy hour. Rule 9 is a favorite. I keep it in mind whenever I ride to the grocery store on a rainy day.
My name is Jonathan Krall. I live in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria and volunteer with BPAC.

ParticipantI’ll be there! Possibly freezing, probably without a saddle.

ParticipantFWIW, there is a posting about this bikeway over at GGW:

ParticipantAs promised, here is the article: http://www.alexandrianews.org/going-car-free-it-isnt-just-for-new-yorkers/

ParticipantThanks for replies. I managed to get enough feedback via local Alexandria listservs to make the article all about Alexandria. I’ll post it here as soon as it comes out. It should also pop up on washcycle blog.

“What do you need to know?”
First, great to hear about your proactive work in Fairfax. I have good info from this thread already, but would be happy to read more. The main thing I need to know is this: what do you want the public to know about family bicycling?
Also, because I am writing for alexandrianews.org, I still need to hear from Alexandria folk. I am seeking them out through other channels.
Oops! I just realized I already had some Alexandria input in this thread. Thanks!

ParticipantThanks for replies so far. The way my article is shaping up, one of the themes is the idea that available gear (in shops) and facilities (on roads) is barely adequate for adults, much less families.
LAB’s magazine, American Bicyclist, talked about this (see page 15 of the pdf file):
http://bikeleague.org/sites/default/files/Winter_2015_magazine_web.pdfIs this pretty much the case here in NoVa?

ParticipantNotice: This ride was rescheduled to March 14, 10 am, because of a conflict with the St Patrick’s Day Parade on March 7.

ParticipantBecause there is too much ice on the roads and trails for the February 21 bike ride, we are doing a 3-mile hike on that day instead.
The Feb 21 hike is here: http://www.meetup.com/Alexandria-Biking-and-Walking/events/219740686/
The rescheduled 7-mile bike ride is on March 7: http://www.meetup.com/Alexandria-Biking-and-Walking/events/220626696/
