This is a great movie, and also very moving if you don’t know the results of the race ahead of time. I saw it last year while on the Bike Virginia tour, where the video presentation was just OK. Seeing it in a real theater would be a real treat.

Glad you’re OK, but please get checked out. At least see your family doctor if not the emergency room.

The year before last I had a “mystery crash” on Wilson Blvd, where I was out for some time, and woke up in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. It’s not clear from the police report what happened. Apparently I wasn’t hit by a car.

For a couple of weeks after that I had frequent dizzy spells that came on very quickly. You don’t want that to happen while you’re driving or riding your bike, believe me.

I’m pretty sure I don’t own a single piece of clothing made of tweed…

Ordered the Bar Mitts. My bike has the Di2 electronic shift levers, and sometimes it’s hard to hit the correct shift button even in the middle of the summer with fingerless gloves. I used mid-weight gloves in August on a trip to Idaho, where the temperature was about 30 degrees. I could only shift by using the very tips of my fingers. Lobster gloves are not an option.

Here’s hoping the Bar Mitts lets me use much thinner gloves so I don’t have to stick to one gear all winter. I’m not cut out to be a fixie person :)

How about info on how to select a good route? What makes a route safe vs. non-safe? Tradeoffs of time vs. distance. Using Google Maps or another tool. When to take the MUP vs. going cross-country through the neighborhoods…

I do think the best short term solution is better signage to tell cars to beware of crossings (flashing yellows, signs more than 10 feet before the crossing).

Yeah, but that wouldn’t be aesthetic, or park-like, or historically appropriate or something. Don’t you know the GWP is supposed to be like driving on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah NP? Watch out for the bears!

My right knee is kind of munged up from when I weighed close to a quarter ton back in 2003. As I was losing weight I started with walking, then jogging, and at the same time starting biking. I got OK with the running. The longest I ever ran was 11 miles, but I did 4-5 miles at least 4 times a week. But the nagging knee pain never ever went away. It still hurts if I don’t baby it, even though I hardly even walk any more, let alone jog. If I move it’s on a bike (or a car :) ).

I really wish I could still run, especially during the winter when it’s harder to get out and ride for us non-hard-core types. I may give it another shot here this fall and winter, because I really did enjoy it. But I think it’s possible that it’s just a form of exercise I’ll never really be able to do.

the new Serfas light I bought is designed to pivot left and right, so it’s easy to aim off to the side. It’s fixed vertically however. One nice thing about the magicshine light with the o-ring mount was how easy it was to shift up and down.

I have a pair of cheap Performance brand tights that I wear over regular bike shorts when it’s down to about 35-40 degrees or so, and a pair of heavier tights with zippers at the ankles that I use when it’s anything below that. The Performance tights aren’t very thick — about the thickness of standard arm warmers. The other tights are way too thick unless it’s very, very cold.

I’m as selfish as the next person. When I read that article my first thoughts were — bike paths OK; flowers and museums Not OK.

I’m sure most of the drivers on the road feel “Bike Paths Not OK”….

I think it’s OK to use blinky mode when the sun is setting low, and maybe just a bit after dusk. With the ambient light I don’t see how this could hurt any oncoming riders.

Once it’s more dark than not I switch to the lowest steady setting. Even with that I need to cover the light when approaching another rider.

Some are born ninjas. Some achieve ninjahood, and some have ninjahood thrust upon them.
