Not my pic. Just a google image search.

The week before last in Idaho I rode most of the popular 70-mile “Trail of the Couer d’Alenes” bike path. They had some of the most egregious, dangerous bollards I’ve ever seen. This one was supposedly damaged by vandals, but it could just as easily been from a rider smashing into it:

I just had to have a Kysrium SL rim replaced because of rim cracks like that. I had more than 2500 miles on them but it was still a little disappointing. It cost me $300 to get the rim and spokes replaced at the factory. Cheaper than a new wheel I guess.

It’s on fire at the moment. My thoughts go out to everyone evacuating and fighting the fire. I know people doing both.

I’m going to volunteer and then ride and then volunteer again. It is going to be a weird but fun weekend. My trip will be a whirlwind.

Hope all goes well. A friend shared this pic of what’s happening there right now:

Looking ahead: Perhaps a party-paced Gravel Ride on 8/25? This will be my last gravel ride before going to Idaho the next weekend. I’m thinking of riding the tandem.

What’s the scoop on your Idaho ride? I just did the Ride Idaho ride last week in the panhandle (Coeur d’Alene, Sandpoint, Thompson Falls, Wallace et environs.) Two years ago the ride was in the Sawtooths which was just gorgeous.

My family is from SW Idaho, where, except for some areas around the Snake River, the riding is not… great, unless you like lots of flat corn and sugar beet fields with all the roads laid out in a mile-square grid pattern… and chip-sealed within an inch of their lives…

You might need to bring a respirator. The whole state is one smoky mess from fires in central Idaho. There was smoke in Boise over 50 miles away.

The Culpeper C. is pretty much a go-at-your-own pace kind of ride. Not the same vibe as a “Grand Fondo” I guess. There’s no timing or anything kept. You might well find groups to ride with, but the terrain is pretty roller-y (with only a couple of steep hills) so I find that groups tend to break up and reform. As long as I can see somebody ahead of me and somebody behind me, I consider that a “group” :)

All the sticky stuff on my bike comes from the sweat of my brow.

Back when Freshbikes was Contes, my bike came with a shop sticker which I promptly removed. The first time I took it in for something they put another one on. I removed that one too.

They haven’t put any more stickers on since then :)

OK, it was only $25 to ship FedEx ground. Probably cheaper than an extra checked bag. Assuming the box arrives safely, this should work fine.

    Assuming.

Thanks for the advice. Somebody at Freshbikes also suggested bringing the wheel bag as carryon and having them check it like they do for baby strollers. Hadn’t really considered that.

I’ve decided just to put the wheels in the shipping boxes that I have here and Fedex them ahead, and then I’ll swap the wheels and ship them back when I get there. It will end up costing me too much money, but I don’t want to deal with the hassle at the airport.

The plan is to have Mavic wheels on the way out, and Zipp wheels on the way back. Not sure that will affect how they’re handled though :)

I don’t think I would want to put this thing in as carryon. It’s huge.

I still have the original shipping boxes for my zipp wheels. I guess maybe I’ll just ship them separately from my flight via FedEx. I guess I could bring the boxes on the plane and check them as luggage.

I don’t fly very often, and all this stuff makes me nervous :(
