Oof I shoulda read this thread before I spent 90$ signing up for this yesterday.

I’m not sorry I signed up, but it would be nice if the race organizers came on here and answered questions/concerns.

Haha. I’m sure orange cone slalom teams (you know who you are, I’m sure they exist in Europe) drool at pictures like that, but to the rest of us, that picture makes it one of the worst rail-trails in the country. Not best.

Why dont people remove the cones?

Pish. I’m frequently told by pedestrians and joggers that I’m the friendliest/most courteous biker they’ve encountered – usually as I chit chat with them (over the of my hubs) while I’m waiting for a clear trail to pass.

NO WAY, thats me! Kidding. Seriously though, I dropped my bell and now pass with a courteous “ma’am/Sir, I am going to be on your left here on a bike” I either get a thank you or a spaced out look (earbuds or out of it peds). However, if someone is rude I go to the 11 anger (sounding) scale.

Back to the topic, there is no room for this bullshit, but women (and men), please carry some pepper (OC) spray and be aware. Definitely be aware of your surroundings at all times on these trails. Ive seen allot of creepazoids of all socioeconomic levels on all of the trails in the Arlington loop area.

NO worries, I am using one of these Elite Byasi in an Arundel plastic bottle cage, should work in any type. They are also now on Amazon for around the same price, but when I ordered they were charging $12 + 9.99 shipping on amazon. The Ebay option was cheaper and easy.

Will there be security for the bikes at the after-event so we dont have to carry locks?

The only problem with the CT-5 is Park Tool says its not for 11 speed chains. I carry it only to break the chain in my winter setup (bidon style carrier) along with a quicklink. I wouldnt want to use it to rejoin an 11 speed, so I have an 11 speed compatible for my spring-fall setup on my multitool.

I had a very similar thing happen to me in Fairfax County. I immediately called the police and waited for them at the scene. When they arrived, they tried to blame it on me several ways. I gently pushed back and convinced them that I was 100 percent legal and in the right, but they still didn’t care. I even tracked down were the driver lived (it was in my neighborhood, so it was easy), but they still didn’t care. I followed up with supervisor, but he also didn’t care. So at this point, I personally wouldn’t bother reporting it. We are on our own out there.

I agree, we are, but I would still file anyway. If no satisfaction, contact your local Congressional Rep (outside DC), city councilperson whatever.

Sorry to NECRO POST, but this came up on another forum.

I have some experience and training in Self defense, MA, and firearms.

I carry a clip on OC spray in my jersey pocket. Some like to clip them to the bike, but then if you are thrown, tossed, or otherwise separated from your bike, you have nothing. I prefer the stream type with a flip cap based on experience. Something like this is near ideal: http://www.amazon.com/PepperGard%C2%AE-Flip-Top-Safety-Pepper-Spray/dp/B00YSZRVH8/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1454514981&sr=8-6&keywords=flip+cap+pepper+spray

If you are truly concerned, a clip in spyderco knife like a delica is also great, but this requires additional training in my opinion. Training in deployment is important, but also legal ramifications, so this option isnt ideal for everyone.

I have a friend from out of town who is considering signing up but has a few specific questions:

Will there be bathroom breaks along the route?

The dotted lines… are they still blocked off roads or bike trails?, what do they mean?

Is the route entirely on pavement?

Will the changes in direction be clearly marked /identified?

He slowed down about a block away (under the bridge) and looked back, dismounted. He didnt look sorry at all. When I asked him what he thought he was doing he just looked at me. I then said “you didnt maintain your line” No response. I then asked “did you even see me.” Finally he said “I’m sorry?” and kind of shrugged. I could see i was just inconveniencing him by slowing him down further. Basically, an irresponsible cyclist. I guess its a lesson, no matter what you do to avoid, and look ahead, there is still someone out there who can endanger you.

Thanks for all the well wishes, Hopefully I wont be discouraged from cycling on the paths.

I am ok, and many thanks for asking. That IS the area. Very good detective work. I was at the 7:00 area of your red circle, and landed in the rocks you can see right at the edge of the red after the collision.
