Does anybody know the current ability to ride Rock Creek on weekends. I have been on it about 3 times but led by another rider so I am not familiar. I want to be able to take two friends on a 17-25 mile ride starting at say the nature center and ending there. If anybody can help with a ride map with the current construction that would be outstanding.

Here’s my very late entry. Dates back to our first “snow” of the season. Riding from the FMR Trail in Madison Manor over to Roosevelt Street, I was flagged down by a woman who was hopelessly lost while trying to deliver a kugel. Seems Arlington’s penchant for streets that are discontinuous had bolluxed this poor lady as she was in the 1200 block of Quantico but needed to get to the 1000 block. So I offered to lead her there on my bike. I navigated around and about to connect over to the needed address and she told me I was a “mensch.” This being Saturday, I wished her “Shabbat Shalom” and continued on my merry way. A little biking with a mitzvah.

The mitzvah level of this deed is determined by the TYPE of kugel. Were you offered a sample? Was it a potato kugel or sweet/noodle kugel? If Noodle, did it have raisins and cinnamon? I think its mitzvah x2 if its a potato kugel. Mitzvah x1.1 if its noodle. Mitzvah x1.753 if noodle and cinnamon/raisin.

Today I fixed my buddy’s rear derailleur tension while out on the ride. But once I stopped to fixe someone’s chain, but that was last march, but it WAS during a winter, just not THIS winter:

    http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?10127-Finally-got-to-use-my-chain-breaker!-IT-WORKS!!!!

“I FINALLY got to use my chain breaker on the trail. Not on my bike, but as I approached an apparently downed teenager, I (as I customarily do) asked if he was ok. He held up his chain like a bunch of dropped spaghetti. I told him I might be able to sort out his spaghetti mess. Happily, I had just learned to replace my chain this winter when I put a new groupset on my bike. His chain snapped up right at the KMC quicklink. I had a quicklink, but it didnt fit his drivechain, so I used my chain destroyer to bust up a link, and recycled one of his pins to get him home. Hopefully it worked out for him. Hardest part of the job was rethreading the chain on the derailleur (IE, it wasnt hard). Process took me 5-7 minutes tops. Glad I could help him, and best of all it was super good practice. Moral of the story: you wont break any KOMS or whatever stravacrap you are into if you stop, but you WILL improve your mechanic skillz dramatically. IE: help others with their snapped up spaghetti.”

You can come that way. You’ll win the FS award for either “Best Smelling” or “Most Kempt.” Seriously though, it doesn’t matter. People show up in work clothes, bike clothes. no clothes. It’s all good.

    No clothes it is!

My 10spd 105 (5700) RD shifts slightly better than my 11spd 105 (5800) RD and the only time I’ve ever had to adjust it is when swapping cassettes, and even then it’s like half a turn of the barrel adjuster. Can’t really tell the difference on the FD. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

That’s wild. My (very good) shop installed 105 101speed was horrible, needing adjustment every other ride (like full rear derailleur adjustment service) and perfectly clean cables (as in new every 1000 miles). My Self-Installed (same bike) and self-sourced (from Merlincycle) 11-speed Ultegra has only needed 2 x quarter turns on the rear barrel adjuster in 3000 miles, no cable changes, and left looking clean-ish but not sparkling clean.

    Sorry to necro post.

Avoid all Shimano 10 speed. This was their first effort with running the cables under the bar tape. Shifting is terrible on these, needing adjustment every 100 miles or less. At least when I had it. This was on all original models of 105, ultegra, dura ace. Shimano fixed this problem with 11 speed by running the cable entry differently into the hoods. Other than that, for me Shimano Mechanical all the way, 8, 9, or 11 speed. Also, I like all shimano groupset, down to the brakes and crankset (which are two places that bike manufacturers usually chintz out).

Eventually SRAM may eventually change all that with Etap, but I would want to wait a few years (or more) to see about reliability/durability. I don’t understand having Shimano DI2 with electrical cables. If you are going to have cables anyway, why not just stay with mechanical groupset.

I’m In. Is it kosher to walk/metro over or will I be excommunicated?

I just got a call from the Fort Myers security force, from my discussion, it sounds like this individual officer has some known issues. The Lieutenant who called me was very respectful and understanding, and he seems aware of these kind of issues.

Thanks, Just submitted my complaint. I was standing on the trail that goes around the cemetery when the incident happened (when I was accosted), NOT in the cemetery grounds. Not sure who has jurisdiction here???? Capitol Police, NPS, Ft Meyers, Arlington?

In the future, I am going to take your advice ant totally avoid the guard area. Clearly they are not dealing with a full deck. In the past, when I was commuting, I would use their crosswalk, but only about 4 times as in 50% of those times they organized cars to drive nearly into me as I was crossing (after a different guard had waved me through). They are very poorly organized there, and clearly have terrible manners and conduct.
