Participant2/10/21 – 5 or 6 point Star (but not on American flag)
Brookland bridge stars! There used to be more before the bridge reconstruction, but these were preserved for the time being. Painted by neighborhood kids.

Participant2/9/21 – Pizza! (but not Pizza Hut or Domino’s)
Two unrelated DC friends who were born and raised in Italy vouch for Menomale’s wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, and this native Jersey girl likes it a lot, too. The owner is from Naples. The original location is in Brookland. A second just opened in NoMa (https://dc.eater.com/2021/2/4/22264883/menomale-salumeria-pizza-restaurant-italian-deli-opening-noma). Alas, it’s closed on Tuesdays, but with homemade sourdough pizza dough in the fridge, I still got to celebrate pizza day!

Participant2/8/21 – the word “Japanese” on a sign
Another shot of the WWII Japanese American internment camps memorial. It’s so powerful to see the ripples in the water activated when the gong chimes. Tonight it was covered by a thin sheen of ice.

Participant2/7/21 – Superb Owl (or a few alternatives)
Am I watching the owl or is the owl watching me? Bike selfie in the mirror.

Participant2/6/21 – Ice Cream or Frozen Yogurt
Captain Cookie and the Milkman! At Tastemakers food hall near the end of the Metropolitan Branch trail.
Ice cream sandwich treat for kidMBear after a ten-miler.
She recommends dark cherry ice cream sandwiched between a snickerdoodle and a double chocolate cookie (visible by the truck tire).

The Franciscan Monastery in Brookland has beautiful rose gardens. Here you can see the thorny stems of a “Veteran’s Honor Dark Red Hybrid Tea Rose” plant in the snow.February 4, 2021 at 3:44 am in reply to: Freezing Saddles 2021 – Daily Photo Scavenger Hunt #1110917Indiana
Participant2/3/21 – Ritchie Valens subanagram
I confess that I took a picture of this sign at the National Arboretum thinking “insects” might work but then realizing that would need another “s.” I kept it in hopes of finding anagrams within later on–didn’t want to waste riding time! It turns out that there’s a bunch:

Small but important typo — she purchased her freedom in 1810, not 1910.
Ack, yes, good catch!

Happy panting furry dogs
Painted long bizarro dog
The word “dog”All at the dog park at Alethia Tanner park on the Met Branch Trail. I was reading recently how this relatively new park was named for Alethia Tanner who was born a slave, purchased her freedom in 1910, helped free others, and worked to establish the first school for black children in DC.

Is this at a Ronald McDonald house? Those are such awesome facilities. I have some young friends who have been in one off and on since their son was born a year ago with many, many issues. It’s more home than their own house for now.
Yep, there’s one in Brookland, mainly for families with children cared for at Children’s National Hospital. It makes such a difference to allow family to stay close. Best wishes for your friends and their son.

I enjoyed this one a lot! I got a few photos with a more Mondrian shade of blue, but this was the most fun shot:

I thought at first this was a skateboarder coming in fast behind me on the crowded MBT and whipped my phone around to catch the action.

Got passed by a red one but couldn’t catch it. Thankfully happened upon a blue at “prosperity tire center.”
