2/21/21 – the round Peace symbol or the word “peace” (in any language)

Peace pole at the Franciscan Monastery in NE DC. It reads “May peace prevail on Earth” in several languages and is part of a global peace messaging movement that started in Japan after WWII:

2/20/21 – Overhead Picture from “Such Great Heights” (+1 point for including biker)

Looks like I had a similar idea to LhasaCM, but this biker saved me from going up the Rhode Island Ave metro bridge.

On 2/20/1792 – The Postal Service Act, establishing the United States Post Office Department, is signed by President George Washington. 211 years later, one of my favorite albums – Give Up – was released by the band The Postal Service in 2003. On this album is a song called “Such Great Heights” and it is the theme for the photo hunt for the day.

On your ride, 229 years after the original Postal Service was created, take a creative photo from a high vantage point looking downwards, whether atop a bridge, overlook, or somewhere else that’ll give you a great overhead view. Bonus point if there is a clearly discernible biker in the photo. BTW, no selfies/danger pandas for this hunt.

    Happy hunting!

At risk of displaying my ignorance, what’s a danger panda?

2/19/21 – Planet(s) – likeness or name of a specific planet or the word “planet”

Hard to choose which one today! I saw Earth on a “climate victory garden” sign. I passed the deep sea solar system* mural on the MBT. Newton Street might work, in reference to Isaac Newton’s work on planetary motion. But in honor of Perseverance, I snagged Mars outside the Air and Space museum.

    * Fun fact – we have more detailed maps of the surface of Mars than of Earth’s deep ocean.

Note to LisaE – I appreciate your Holstian contribution! Jupiter Bringer of Jollity is my favorite one to play. – clarinetist

2/18/21 – Full Electric Car (Hybrids OK!)

Today’s ride was mostly about avoiding cars since they were slipping around more than I was on a fat tire bike.

I think the rules changed after I rode, but thankfully I took a couple different shots. I couldn’t remember if the rules were for an “electric car” or “electric vehicle,” so hoping for the latter I photographed a couple ebikes, a scooter, and the metro. But then I came home and saw that “car” was specified. And now, apparently, hybrids are okay. I have a hybrid electric with a bike rack on it, but since I can’t use my own, here’s someone else’s smart car I saw on my ride:

There also were a few chicken coops, but this one was cuter.

2/16/21 – Crown or Mask (with eyeholes)

This probably doesn’t count, but laissez les bons temps rouler, anyway! After biking back to our rental place, my daughter baked the Mardi Gras treat with King Arthur flour products, which, she pointed out, sport a crown logo.

That’s what the sign on the rock said, “Tory’s” being the sub anagram. It wasn’t that clear in person because of snow, and became less clear in the photo shrunk for posting, but it was the only one I found! :) I don’t know who Tory is, but her part of the mountain we were passing through was beautiful!

Meant to circle back around to get a photo of Murry & Paul’s but ice and traffic weren’t cooperating, so here’s Brookland Grill:

    2/11/21 – Movie Poster

Angelika pop-up theater at Union market was dark with no posters. Fortunately I found a poster of posters (right above my bike in the photo, zoomed in version on Strava) at the Miracle Theater, which is apparently DC’s oldest movie theater. It says that you can buy tickets to stream certain titles from home to support the independent theater.

As for favorite bike-centric movies, I’m having better luck thinking of bike-centric scenes in:

    The Sound of Music
    Goonies
    My Girl
    Life is Beautiful
And several with Kermit the Frog and other Muppets on bike, including one of my favorite winter holiday movies, Emmett Otter’s Jug-band Christmas.
