Karoo Hammerhead priced dropped from $399 to $249 for the next couple of days. If you know someone who already has one or go to the Facebook user group, there are early adopter discount codes available that drop the price to $199. I didn’t really NEED one, but at that price, I decided to try it out.

It was my usual attempt to be funny, but falling flat :)

By making the font orange, ginormous, and squished together, it covers up the green and the band essentially becomes orange. 😮

I’m often slow on the uptake when it comes to jokes like this (and perhaps in general), but understanding it now, it is quite funny!

I may not get a chance to bike in this week, so if any of you swing by and see there’s a change with the location of the sign above (Corner of Potomac Ave and S Capitol St/Douglass Bridge) let me know. Charles Allen’s team have made a DDOT request on my behalf and want to be kept in the loop as well.

It was still in the same spot this morning.

    Planned obsolescence? Sad!

Far from it. Make them collectibles and use them for bragging rights. Stack them on your leg (or other location) to show how long you’ve been playing!

I vote for ankle bracelet that is a different color. Otherwise, to be honest, I think the Green with no change but the year might be a tough sell. How about ORANGE or SCREAMING YELLOW?

Agree with this. I have several of last year’s model and likely will not buy a new one if only the year changes. Additionally, changing color would provide a little easier identification of those participating this year, vice having last year’s still in use.

Boardwalks and bridges along the Potomac were very frosty this morning. Be prepared for lowered traction!

I know they are still working there, but really wish they would smooth out the pavement in front of the current Wharf construction. It is horrible for bike and car traffic. I hit one of the myriad potholes this morning and broke a spoke.

Sounds like our experiences are similar. I’ve been using these gloves https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01J0BQSRS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and they work well for me to freezing temps. At that point, I have some heavier ones, but I like the mitten idea and may give your’s a try. I too have cold toe problems that I haven’t really solved, but larger than normal shoes, heavy wool socks, and toe covers do a fairly good job for me.

    For me it’s mostly walkers.

Sadly, those reporting the lack of longevity for the KNOG appear to be correct. It worked well while it lasted, but has now become a 50% chance of getting a ring vice more of a thump. The rings that do come out have gotten significantly softer. Guess I’m back in the market. I may try the Lux version or I may just pull out my old Spurcycle and put up with the slightly larger size. Perhaps I’ll put the Lux on my Christmas list and see what happens.

As for the whole commuting thing, I guess that rules me out since I work from home full-time. That being said, I pretty much ride every day (well, 5-6 x week on average) so take that for what it’s worth (or not).

That all being said, I’m competitive by nature and found that this kept me motivated to ride outside.

Heartily agree. Understanding the issue with DC commuters living close to work and not riding as far as MD and VA commuters, I still pull for local groups to enhance the social aspect, but will ride either way.

Welcome back! If you’re interested in riding with others, look up the Prince William Cycling Club on Facebook (and Strava, but Facebook gets more use.) It’s a pretty active bunch of folks with three to four rides scheduled per week. Usually in the Manassas area, but sometimes around DC, out W&OD, or other venues.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I’m a bike person so I’m willing to drop $300 on a weatherproof cam that takes looping footage, but only if it’s dependable, since I would be using it every day. I’ve used a cheapo one before but it was something of a novelty item, it was obtrusive, and the battery would give out almost immediately in cold weather. It seems odd to me that there isn’t a durable no frills $100 camera, but I guess there just isn’t a big enough market for it yet. I’ll look again in a year.

Consider a used GoPro Hero 5 if you want interchangable batteries, or an original Session if 2 hours run time is sufficent and you want a smaller package. Both offer looping. I have both and use them on and off the bike. Be careful that not all GoPros offer looping, including the Hero 6 and some versions of the Hero 7. I think, but am not sure that all of the Sessions have looping. For my use, I like the Hero 5 for looping, ease of use with the touch display, and the ability to carry and swap batteries for a longer outing. GoPro accessroies are also easy to come by to get a mount (or multiple) that suit your needs.

In this group I had TWO cyclists VERY aggressively yell things at me about my light and not covering it. I’ll be honest, the aggression was worse than I get from 99% of cars for taking the lane. No one else seemed bothered by my light other than these two so my take is that they take not covering a light as more of a personal affront. Or they have super-attenuated vision beyond everyone else.

Did they have a light of thier own? It seems that the people without a light are often the most offended and I wonder if it is because thier eyes are adjusted to the darkness more than those who are using a light.
