    OK, that’s bad news (and we’ve all had similar happen along there) but cyclists routinely blow the trail signs, double or triple up on the road climbing (legal but not terribly courteous given that there is a good trail). On the downhill, riders weave in and out of traffic at the stop and then sprint left (or just ride down the oncoming lane). Folks who live on the block all have stories of being buzzed on the trail while trying to get their newspaper and the subject of this post has a 3yo that he won’t take on the trail at all for fear of riders.

    IHMO, “trail up” and “road down” matches probable speeds and objective and pedestrian hazards.

    He’s got an enclave… several acres right up against I-66, 1880’s farmhouse that ended up stranded when I-66 was built. Also has a private exit/entrance from/to 66 EB since it’s technically his driveway:

    Weird real estate quirk.

    On the flip side (and definitely not excusing the parking) he and I have had some animated conversations about cyclist behavior along Virginia/WOD. If I wanted to document bad behavior, the intersection at the bottom of VA Ln would be a good place to do so.

    I can’t believe this, but I know that guy/car- used to work with him. He lives down the madcam highway access road just east of the bridge (I bet that you didn’t know that there was a house down there). His road gets obliterated by the plows and the grade is too steep to exit in ice anyway. I’ll explain the issue… he’s a good guy, should understand.

    Snow-day bump on this post- my iPhone4 + Cyclemeter combo is almost useless since OS7 slowed my phone to a crawl and upgrading to a new iPhone will make all of my old kit (case, ANT+ sensors) obsolete. Buying it all again will cost nearly $300, might as well get a proper set up. Anyone have any more thoughts on the 810 as a day-use hiking companion GPS? Has anyone actually loaded non cycling topo maps?

    I suspect that question 7- “Do you come to a full stop at intersection crossings?” Is going to come back to haunt us. “90% of daily bike commuters responded that they blow through intersections”. At the very least that one needed to be two questions: 1. Do you stop at lighted or major intersections and 2. Do you stop at the 50+ tiny crossings.

    My other issue is similar to what Bob mentioned- trail capacity and usage is hugely dependent on timing: what’s safe and appropriate for a commuter at 6am in February is not at all the same thing for a rider at 2pm during Cherry Blossom season. Circumstances result in the appropriate response, not enforcement of arbitrary laws.

    Oh, there is absolutely nothing technical or scary out there, you just won’t be able to ride it on slick tires since 1) you’ll spin out on every hill and 2) the off camber turns (two of note) will eat your lunch. In both cases you’ll land on nice soft grass but it just wouldn’t be too much fun. Also note that the guy in the video is a very good rider- makes it look effortless when in fact it is most effort-full.

    This would be a great choice- non-technical and very representative of an actual CX course BUT expect to walk/run/scamper up some of the hills (which is part of CX). For bike choice, most important would be tires- it’s just no fun with slicks (right Matt?). Might want to try the MTB with knobbies first.
