ParticipantBrendon,
I agree that it’s not totally intuitive when you’re actually riding. It’s a good example of how bicycles aren’t pedestrians or cars…we’re bikes! There are signs that instruct bicycles to follow the pedestrian walk/don’t walk lights. It gives peds/bikes a few second head start to get out in the intersection before cars go to help with visibility. There are also signs to instruct cars to yield to bikes and on cross streets that allow a left turn there are green and red lights. Cars are not allowed to turn while pedestrians and bikes are moving. Ideally, DDOT would have put in bike lights as well but to save some money they only used signs. I’ve attached a photo of one of the signs. It’s not a great photo.

ParticipantThis is awful! I can’t believe that MPD’s construction contractors were allowed to get away with this terrible craftsmanship. It’s completely useless. We (WABA) will contact MPD and get them to fix this.
For future reference, you can always email WABA at waba@waba.org for general questions/concerns. It may take a day or two to get to the right person. For advocacy issues, you can email advocacy@waba.org and it will go to the staff members who primarily deal with advocacy issues.

ParticipantYou’re absolutely right. We’ve been having major issues with our web server the past few weeks with long outages. I’ve been working closely with our system admin and hosting service to fix the underlying issues. As they continue to work on the problem, it knocks the website down. I’m hoping we getting close to being out of the woods but I won’t know until we are. I apologize for the inconvenience.

ParticipantThat’s sweet. It’s like a aftermarket light set-up for a tuner car. Do you have a link to a website to buy such lights?
Thanks,

ParticipantI’d like to say from WABA perspective, I’d prefer not to have to be as involved moderating (or at least monitoring) the forums. I have other plenty of other work to do (as do the other moderators). It’s not a freedom of speech issue or “divine right” that I feel to moderate, it’s about keeping this forum open to discussion from all members of the cycling community. Please feel free to express your thoughts and ideas but without personal attacks or profanity. Pretty simple. I get requests almost daily from area cyclists looking for information and a place to connect with area experts on bicycling. I send them to the forums because almost thing discussed and talked about has been just that: helpful, respectful, inclusive and all of those other feel-good words. Let’s keep it that way.
Thanks to everyone for being a helpful and respectful members of the forums!
(I’ll see you all out on the roads as 100% daily bike commuter, rain, shine, snow or cold)

ParticipantAs you guessed it, helmets are required by our event insurance company. This has always been the case at WABA events and will be for the foreseeable future. All major cycling events that carry insurance (Nation’s Tri, Bike DC, etc.) require helmets per their insurance. It’s not an issue of legality but of liability.
Nevertheless, we hope this doesn’t keep people attending our events.

ParticipantDid you call the police / get a police report? I know that it isn’t the first thing on your mind after a terrible situation like this but it’s worth it.
WABA is working with Councilmember Mendelson to hold a hearing about pedestrian and cyclist safety and how MPD helps (or doesn’t) help in enforcing the law. So, it’s important that people are calling the police and that the police are doing their jobs correctly.
I hope you’re ok.

ParticipantGreen Wave light signalization would be the obvious solution. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_wave
Programming an optimal lighting sequence against traffic (northbound being the direction car traffic travels) is very challenging if not impossible. And the perfect solution of two greenwaves (one northbound and one southbound) is even more complicated.
Has anyone done some testing of the optimal speed to hit the lights? I’d definitely ride slower/faster to hit the green lights.

ParticipantAccording to DDOT, the cycletracks should be finished by next Tuesday.

ParticipantCall DC Department of Public Works’ parking enforcement at 311. They are responsible for parking enforcement in DC. Please let us know how successful (or not) you are with double parking cars.

ParticipantI can teach unicycling. I’ve been riding for over 10 years and performed professionally for about 5 years. I taught 3 semesters of a juggling and unicycling class at university in NY. I’m also a LCI (League Cycling Instructor). Feel free to shoot me an email – gregbilling (at) gmail.com

ParticipantThere was a guy cruising around Adams Morgan and Mt Pleasant a few weeks ago on one of these. It was VERY loud. I could hear it from blocks away. I wonder if you have to wear ear plugs while riding it.

but hopefully they won’t fade like the SmartbikeDC bikes did!
I sure hope so. Those bike look like garbage now. Although, I still hope to acquire one when the system is shut down (if it ever does).
