I agree with you sort of….. For those of us marooned in Maryland it would be nice if a group of Marylanders were on a team because we would be able to do more group rides. Last year was my first BAFS and I did make the journey out to Vienna and Arlington and various places to meet teammates. However, no one was really excited to come that far into Maryland territory. Maybe it’s the crazy drivers? Anyway I get that it would be a total pain in the behind, just my thoughts.

We have a fairly active winter riding bunch out of College Park — usually riding in the Beltsville research farms or along the river trails and commuter routes toward DC. I’ve been distracted by a side project (moving my wife’s bike shop) this summer and fall so haven’t scheduled as many longer social rides, but hoping to get back into that in time for Freezing Saddles next year. -Jeff

Wondering if any ride marshals (or anyone really) had feedback on the route changes this year? I felt like the changes seemed well received, particularly getting more miles further into DC on the ART. But I did hear once complaint about skipping Greenbelt National Park (which is a pretty area but hard to access by bike…)

I’m going to be riding tandem, but not the whole route. We’re going to leave from Greenbelt at 9:15 at the New Deal cafe, and planning to get to Shortcake Bakery for snacks at about 9:45. Then we’ll be riding the longer-route, but short- circuiting back in Greenbelt. If anyone would like to ride with us for those parts, we’ll probably be at Shortcake baker until about 10am, then to Proteus by about 10:45 or so. So I won’t be going to the start/finish this year — no Cider for me! -Jeff

Cider ride 2018 bumpo. It’s on Saturday right? What time are all of yall planning to meet up at the start? Who’se marshalling our merry band of idiots this year?

Hi all, sorry I haven’t been able to post much lately. NOTE for Cider Ride marshalls and just overall helper-bees: the routes have been tweaked a bit this year. The longer route now goes back past the Greenbelt Metro and Lake Artemesia after the Greenbelt Cider stop. (We skipped the Greenbelt National Park bit this year in favor of a more commuter-oriented route. Note the straight through crossing of Keniworth Ave right after the stop at Greenbelt Lake and the little path up to Ivy Lane).

The route now also extends further south into DC on the Anacostia River trail on the south side, before doubling back on the north side to the RFK stadium area. This is a great addition that will really show of those wonderful sections of trail in DC.

    Check your maps! -Jeff

PS. We’re expecting rain Friday night. Please remind fellow riders to watch out for siippery wood bridges and wet leaves. And, as always, in Prince George’s county, watch for unexpected bollards at trail entrances. We got some removed under the underpasses last year, but still several awkwardly placed bollards at road/trail intersections.

On the slippery ART boardwalk near Bladensburg, God has installed a speed bump.

Anacostia River Trail and tributary trails were fine this morning. A little muddy, but not deep mud — OK for road tires under semi-skilled rider. Wood bridges slippery as usual after multiple days wet.

The “wet spot” on the ART was fixed yesterday quickly. The gravel patchwork is well done. There was a lot of concern yesterday morning about the sudden closure (the work arounds are miles out of the way) but they got the work done before the afternoon commute.

Following up, Laurie was told this project was all finished this afternoon so no lingering impact for commuters.

I think it was intended as a barrier to keep people out when the pond level rose. But in the meantime it makes for a very challenging hop over with loaded panniers.

ART and Anacostia River Trib trails (that I rode at least) were open and OK this morning, and I saw two @PGParks crews out checking them over, which is great!
