Hard to tell from the pic, but is it a Kona Sutra Ltd?
Yep, in its natural element. That was a 15% grade, so I had to stop and take lots of pictures…

What would be your favorite bike for light touring? Like GAP + C&O?

My take on my MTBing experiences is similar with the root-y trails. Rosaryville is awesome (although it still has roots and rocks), but I’m not particularly a fan of Wakefield and have never really wanted to try Fountainhead. Lake Fairfax was okay the one or two time(s?) I’ve done it. My MTB is not expendable though because it’s a titanium 29er that rides so much sweeter than any other MTB I ever owned and with CX/gravel tires it doubles as a spare gravel bike. I sort of imagined MTBing to have more open space and just dirt and smaller rocks I guess rather than slippery roots winding through woods.
The trick to to enjoying this area’s rooty single track is…… single speed, zero suspension. Seriously. You will go slower, work harder and choose your lines very carefully, or risk being unhorsed!

ParticipantI found 5 coveted BAFS and BA zipper pulls that I had forgotten about. I shall award them to teammates at the final happy hour based on flattery, servitude etc.

ParticipantYou’ll have a blast — the trails out this way have beautiful scenery lots of wildlife and won’t be crowded. I’m doing a pastry ride on the trails in the morning so maybe we’ll fly by.

ParticipantI did some more recon on the ART on the way home from work, and can report now that all the wood bridges are clear, but there are still a couple place at underpasses where there’s a small icy or snow dump spot that you need to be careful for. One of them under the Amtrak bridge comes up kinda quickly if you’re sightseeing.

ParticipantART/NE Branch trail is good from Bladensburg marina to Lake Artemesia/UMD. Even the wood bridges clear enough to ride with narrow tires. However, the long boardwalk south of the marina was snow covered. You’d have to walk that bit with narrow tires. Basically if it’s asphalt or it gets some sun it’s good, but combo of wood and shade still coated with crusty stuff.
There will be lots of refreeze of puddles in the early morning, though. Should be all good by 10am as temps get above freezing.

ParticipantHi Nadine. Trails clear in this area as of this morning between the NW branch trail and Lake Artemesia. Only a few small places in shady spots where you might have a bit of ice here and there, but there’s asphalt showing through pretty much everywhere except the wood bridges. Note, I did not ride the Anacostia River trail all the way down to DC, so I can’t vouch for the trails south of Armentrout Road. I’ll try to ride that tonight after work and will report back. Also, if it’s below freezing in the morning, there’s a chance melt puddles could freeze, but I think the trails are back in good enough shape with only a few very brief slowdown spots left. -Jeff
