Sorry for the foggy picture, but this morning Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation was removing those annoying and dangerous bollards under the bridge on the Anacostia River Trail, near Bladensburg Marina. I’d also like to thank the parks people for putting in some reflective tape on the bridge rails in several places on the NE Branch trail, which is very helpful for night-time commuters. Plus a shout-out to Laurie for advocacy on the bollard removal — kudos all around!

I was told that I needed to join the forum, in order to play. So I created an account, confirmed my account, posted up here… but still need to figure out the strava thing and the million other rules.

I did go on a few rides last year and went to a few happy hours, so I think I can figure it out and am ready to freeze! But I will definitely need some support. 😮

(There are already 13 pages of posts, just for FS and it hasn’t even started yet? Sorry I didn’t read through them, so if I’m violating any rules, please give me a pass! — I’m sure drevil will give the the cliffnotes version.)

Welcome. It’s more like guidelines than rules most of the time…

As someone who put up a mediocre 1,173 points last year and is now going to be going in with a six month old – generally speaking – would anyone be excited to have me on their team? I can do any team meetup as long as its at Caboose off the W&O or any place in the Mosaic District. I’m super flexible. Swear.

Seriously – I’m looking for a general idea of if I’d meet the bar for “good teammate” or if it’s better for me to sit it out this year.

We had riders last year that got out for 70+ days and still didn’t get much more than 1,000 points. So that sort of effort is to me totally great teammate material. It’s about the participation and enthusiasm and fun, not the mileage! My 10 cents. -Jeff

Just wanted to throw in a pitch for the algorithm NOT kicking off riders for being away long stretches. We’re planning to be out of range for 2 weeks this season — Laurie and I take vacation in January/Feb, this year again in a no bikey type place. (Note, the teams I captained in that past have managed pretty good results in spite of my occasionally disappearing captaincy.) With love and so on, Jeff

I’ll have to think about riding with a marshal, as I generally avoid that on these types of rides. I’m not a very patient or take-it-slow-and-chill type of rider.

Try it on your mountain bike. That will slow you down, plus big fun curb hopping along the way. Or on tandem (curb hopping not necessarily recommended). :)

I’ve suggested a route change to WABA to feature my new home trail (just got the curb fixed) on the way back from the USDA farms (Honeycrisp route) and to also ride a longer stretch on the ART in DC. We’ll see if they bite on my suggestions… Jeff

A good shop will give you a free estimate after fully inspecting the bike — sometimes a bike doesn’t really need a full tuneup, but instead needs a specific new part, like a new bottom bracket. Note also that tuneup prices reflect labor time to adjust brakes, shifting, truing wheels etc., but don’t usually reflect cost of new parts needed (cable housings, chain or cassette etc.) Agree with Judd that shops that serve lots of commuters often best for repair of hard-working bikes. -Jeff
