Thoughts? :) Anyone else plotting any interesting strava art for the big day?

    That’s on point.

I’m tempted to write “And the horse you rode in on” in big letters. Alas, I don’t have LSG’s cursive writing skills, or a big enough parking lot.

    Hello, Crazy Eights!

I made it to happy hour last night, and am stoked about the fun team we’ve assembled. I got to meet (or see again):

    • Joan is a transportation cyclist, so much so that she delivers the compost and even visits her mother by bike.
    • lynnsalvo actually CROSSED THE COUNTRY on her bike! (Joan and lynnsalvo frequently ride with Babes on Bikes.)
    • Our unofficial captain sjclaeys makes his own beer and occasionally challenges himself at the Tuesday morning hill ride.
    • Teresa A was late to happy hour because she was off organizing ANOTHER bike team.
    • And worktheweb is a long-haul commuter, and has excellent priorities for chocolate croissants with great coffee.
    • Absent because he lives in the PNW was Phatboing, who I met long ago at Monday pancakes. He apparently loves Seattle biking so much he rides his legs into Jello.

As for myself, I live in south Arlington (Long Branch Creek) and often commute to my job at NatGeo. I love bike touring and exploring new places. My personal challenge is to beat last year’s mileage, and explore all of Arlington’s public art sites by bike during the winter months. Beer, coffee, and socializing as time permits.

Please feel free to introduce yourselves! And don’t forget to sign up for the Strava team.

#1 Atlas Brew Works Silent Neighbor American Stout – a perfect companion for a very cold day

Peter and I went to Atlas yesterday, and after a good sampling of their offerings, that Silent Neighbor nitro stout was the one we liked most. I have to say none of them were real winners — YMMV. Since we each had a flight plus a couple extra tastings, I would’ve hoped something jumped out more, but most of them were just kinda bizarre.

Also, though a sustainability group I belong to had organized the tour, they kinda forgot to talk about the solar panels. Oh well.

No beerneuring points for me, we didn’t ride there (during the blizzard). And I do want to go back someday to visit the distilleries nearby!

I like the inadvertent misspelling…this is how I’ll refer to any circuits around Hains Point.

Me too! I gave ewilliams0305 credit for a great double entendre.

Looks like a Strava problem, not a hozn problem. The rides are not showing up on the Freezing Saddles club, which is where hozn’s site gets its data.

My ride yesterday got counted on the Freezing Saddles site (after a short reasonable delay, which I suspect is just a timed sync).

But it took half a day to show up in the Strava FS group. It’s definitely a Strava problem, but it didn’t seem to affect hozn’s site.

I hate sweating in rain gear, so I did the opposite and got the pricey Showers Pass Refuge rain pants. In addition to fitting me better than others I tried (room for layers without being overly baggy), they have several ventilation features. Which, of course, should only be deployed based on the amount of rain and temperature. Haven’t tried them in super yucky conditions yet… maybe later today.

I’m also planning to be at the kickoff happy hour — thanks to those who put the work into organizing it!

Look for custom neon-green reflective zipper pulls, coming to an FS event near you in 2017.

And I JUST yanked off one of the zipper pulls on my trunk bag. Now I don’t have to try and fix it 😎

Third Christmas party this week is Thursday night (and it’s NatGeo’s so I kinda have to go).

It doesn’t breathe very well so in early fall when the time changes but the temp is still warm it can be clammy to wear but I don’t care.

I so quickly cross that line from cold to clammy, that I think ALL cycling jackets should have pit zips. But so many of them don’t. My mission is to get good at sewing the zippers in myself.

Last year I gave Peter one of the Zap Versa (convertible) jackets as a gift. He gives it a similar review, somewhat non-breathable but worth it in every other respect. They’ve got the reflective part nailed.

I tried to catch up with him to ask what on earth he was wearing, but had no success.

My guess is one of the Sugoi Zap jackets, with all-over reflection.

Another suggestion for Beerneuring 2017, let’s go visit Atlas Brew Works, DC’s 100% solar-powered brewery located in Ivy City.

The Tap Room is open 4pm-10pm Monday through Thursday, 4pm-11pm Friday, 11am-11pm Saturday & 11am-10pm Sunday. Tours of the brewery are offered on Saturdays at noon, 2pm, 4pm, and 6pm, no reservations required.

I’ll be taking a tour on January 7th, focused on sustainability but of course including tastings. Will report back!

Got an email notification last night that my Oi bell is finally on its way. I’d completely forgotten about it.

It Is titanium, but unfortunately my commuter has an ovalized top tube, so I suspect it wouldn’t work. Also, I have drilled-out cable stops which would need to be changed to zip-tie stops.

It still might be an option. “We can install couplers in almost any bike, even if the tubes are non-round or tapered. However, there is an upcharge for oversized as well as irregular tubes.” Brazing on a few cable guides shouldn’t be a big deal, and if it doesn’t need a paint job you’d save that cost.

Working up the nerve to have someone chop your bike in half is another matter entirely ;) Beyond that, keeping a close eye on eBay and bike forums for a travel frame is probably the best bet.
