it wasn’t as hard as it looked from the bottom looking up it.

Last year I did the Seagull Century. After many miles of Flat! Flat! Flat! we came to a bridge that looked like a mountain, and I thought “you have got to be kidding”.

Of course it was no problem at all, it only looked tough in comparison to everything else.

Ah well, at least she now knows you don’t stay in a bad mood for long.

Rumor is the trail may re-open this evening…

A nice thought. Have they installed the railings yet?

This was the view at the end of my ride last Thursday. North Central State Trail in Michigan, Mullet lake section.

Another reason for me to make trips “back home.” How do you suppose a mountain bike with slicks would work on this trail?

A comment on goals in general, courtesy of Robert Browning:

I came here to post my goal then read all the other posts and now feel completely silly. I have a modest goal of 1,500 miles this year. I am upto 900 so far. Hoping to keep coming back to this thread to keep myself going.

This forum has people with all levels of ability and experience. For some, a 10 mile ride is a major achievement, others (but not me!) can probably do a century in about 4 hours. Keep riding and keep enjoying the ride.

In general the buttons around here seem to be functional

Despite the tongue-in-cheek message, I think this button works also. There are usually some cars waiting at the intersection, which triggers the light anyway. If you push the button you get a Walk signal at the same time the cars get their green light. If I am lazy and don’t push the button, there is no Walk signal but the cars still get their green light, which is good enough for me.

I don’t have mileage goals. My goal for the year is to complete the One Day Ride Across Michigan (ODRAM, about 150 miles) and not be completely dead at the finish. I have done several 95 mile training rides and felt good at the end. I want to do one or two rides in the 120-130 mile range, and do 150-160 miles total over two consecutive days. Then, with proper pacing, I think I’ll be ready.

I get up, get dressed, eat, ride to work.
Mid morning I have some fruit. Two breakfasts. :)

You: young fellow on an old bike, waiting for the light at the Intersection of Doom.
The bike was an old Fuji, maybe dating back to the ’70s. Beautifully maintained. Paint and decals in good shape. Bare metal parts gleaming. Clean drive train. All bikes should be so well taken care of.

I was about to compliment you when the light changed.

I had a similar problem recently (also with a triple). The cable had stretched (causing other shifting issues, of course). Taking the slack out of the cable seems to have fixed it.

If it doesn’t work, get a bigger hammer.

It’s what we used to tell each other in my incarnation as a park ranger.

The sign here says “Welcome to the road to Chianti Classico”. Chianti is one of the historic wine regions of Italy, and Chianti Classico is the heart of it, the original region.

Siena has some very steep streets. This one is a steady 16% grade. The fellows coming up it were part of a supported tour.

My favorite sign from the trip. “Those who pedal change the world sweetly.” No idea who placed it, or why.
