Interesting. The Pinion gearboxes come in steel and magnesium, so this is probably the steel one. Either way they are fairly heavy, but I think an improvement over a rear-hub-mounted gearbox. The weight is just in a better, more centered, spot.

If you Google Bicycle Touring Pro you can find a bunch of good youtube videos feature a Co-motion with 650B and pinion. Another guy he cycles with has a Pinion and Gates bike as well from Germany (with Hydraulic *rim* brakes!).

I would not gloss over the frame design, geometry, and construction with a $2k bike. I don’t know anything about Priority, just a general comment. The Co-Motion Siskyou is $6K, to keep it in perspective.

Videos talking about Pinion-driven bikes from Bicycle Touring Pro:

I’m perfectly happy with my Tektro Cr720 (wide profile canti brakes). If the toe-in is correct and they still squeal it could be something on the rim or brake pad. Just use a green scrubby pad to give the rims and pads a good wipe. Wipe again with rubbing alcohol (or a baby wipe).

There are tons of disk-braked bikes out there squeeeling away. The grass is always greener.

What about the rim and tire width? I have a short wheelbase cargo bike that has Big Ben (race guard?) 50mm and I’ve never had an issue. One of the rims on my bike is 19mm wide and the other is wider (more of a cargo bike/tandem rim) –don’t ask I got a good deal on a 8 speed internal hub wheel. The tire looks much more settled on the wider rim but I’ve never had any issues like you describe. I would definitely take the tube and tire off again and feel/inspect the inside of the rim and rim tape.

When you use an Apple Watch with a paired phone, Strava should use the phone for GPS and the watch just for display. It seems like it your watch battery shouldn’t get that depleted since the GPS ping drains the battery. Perhaps give feedback to Strava and maybe they can come up with a “low power mode” feature to limit watch involvement. Another idea would be to put your watch in airplane mode during part of the ride and see if Strava can handle that. They might have some of their own advice, I suppose.

You can see if you can reduce triggering of the display on the watch. They now have little key-fob looking portable chargers for the watch. They have a built in battery. You’d need to stop and take off your watch and charge it for a bit, though.
    Here’s an example of one.

Rutted icy messes for the most part out there this AM. Snow melt glare ice all over as well. I went down on my driveway. On foot. Good news is I was wearing my skate-style bike helmet! I still had to pick around icy patches on the local streets.

Sorry to hear about your crash! Well, I have experience with front rollerbrakes. They have a disconnect that allows the cable to disengage from the brake on the hub. This is so you can remove the wheel from the bike. It’s a piece of hardware attached to the cable that hooks into an arm on the brake. If that wasn’t properly seated and came loose, it could get tangled in the wheel.

I think it’s like the black arm with the hex nut showing under the axle on the left side of this (random) pic.

Apologies if this was addressed in the 30-page scoring thread (I’ve only now emerged from the coma I fell into around page 6), but do fractional miles count? That is, if I ride 11.2 miles Monday and 18.8 miles Tuesday, does that equal 30 miles (and 50 points), or is everything behind the decimal point dropped do that the total miles would be 29 (and points 49)?

I had the exact same question. Are we rounding miles at any point in the calculation?

Shhhh… that’s where the All-Powerful Bike Lobby has its secret meetings. We need someplace secure to discuss world domination.

    My info…

Hi, I’m Tom aka FFX_Hinterlands. As you might have guessed, I live in the far Northwestern edge of Fairfax Co in the Herndon Area. This is my second time on Team 13 and my third BAFS. I’m also a Bicycle Advocate and help with FABB and Town of Herndon. I’m actually an official Fairfax County Bicycle and Pedestrian Advocate. I also have a small business (http://www.slackangle.com) to encourage bicycling at the workplace.

I recently changed jobs and now I have a super short commute (sleeze commute). I have three kids in middle/high school so I’m pretty busy and I’ve never been to a FS event. Weeknight events are not my friend. I would be up for rides on the weekends or happy hour at one of the nearby excellent breweries. I’m generally free from 7-8AM (oddly enough) as well. For ride purposes: my average ride speed is 11-12 mph on my Handsome Devil and slower (9-10) on my Dutch Bike.
