I was reminded that my shifter cable needs to be re-greased this spring. Two years ago I got water in it and it I was stuck with a 1 speed until the temp went above freezing. Now its just a little, uh, slushy, below freezing.
While I’m here… any suggestions on what type of lube I should use?

I’ve used the Ashgrove Trail before, but it involves quite a few hills if you go via the Barns at Wolf Trap. It’s good to see another link into Tysons. I wonder if there’s a better way linking Tysons from the West (Reston via W&OD) using the Vesper Trail?

Hi, I’m Tom aka “Fairfax Hinterlands.” This is my fourth official freezing saddles. I guess before that I was just riding to work all winter and not fussing over Strava. I live out in the Herndon area and I’ve been a friend of FABB for many years. I’m also a Fairfax County Bicycle Ambassador, which means I volunteer with FCDOT and wear an official green shirt sometimes. My mileage is super short these days as I now work less than two miles from home. It really puts a wrench in the whole “commuting is working out too thing. Shrug.

I don’t tend to make it into Arlington all that often due to a trio of teenagers keeping me busy out here in the Hinterlands.

    Go Team!

We actually purchase cars by length so bike storage is not impacted. We’re a family of five with 8 bikes.

I’m signed up as a Marshal, but I’ve been helping with the back-office stuff a bit. This kind of work lends itself to my soft computer hands.

I’ll probably be the only bike running a giant saddle bag and pogies. See you there.

This is next weekend, Nov 17th. We are looking for both riding and stationary volunteers to help out. This link is the same as above.

Oh, I forgot to mention… As of Saturday Lawyers did not have any lines on the road. It looks like they recently slurry coated the road. It’ has some tar-and-chip patches as well. Just proceed with caution. @bentbike33’s route is also a good one with lots of neighborhood streets if you need to get from Lawyers/FoxMill/Reston Parkway area down to Chantilly.

There are some issues with this route. Lawyers road just west of Twin Branches is a two lane road with little or no shoulder. I would avoid taking Rout665 (no shoulder, hills, lotsa cars) and instead use sidepaths on Lawyers/Reston Parkway aka Route 602. Plus, cutting through South Reston isn’t really helping you much because of elevation changes.

I would take W&OD all the way to Fairfax County Parkway sidepath. That that south all the way to Springhaven as shown. It’s a lot more simple with fewer stream valleys to climb down/up.

I’ve had a rear metal fender get sucked into the wheel before. It made a perfect accordion shape before it folded under the tire and jammed against the bottom of my very sturdy steel dutch rack. To be fair the fender had started to crack near the rear lower support for weeks before it failed. If the same thing would have happened to my front fender I would have gone down for sure.

I’m a fan of SKS fenders, which are made of metal sandwiched in plastic. They are pretty much indestructible and easy to install. I’ve had the front fender detach once when the flap got caught on a curb lip when I rode over it. And no, SKS fenders do not look as pretty as VO fenders. If you put your bike on those front bus racks you’ll appreciate flexible plastic fenders that can squish against your wheel then spring back, no worse for wear.

Hey, just some friendly info… If you purchased lawn seats and the concert is not sold out you can likely exchange them for seats under cover for the difference in ticket price. So in other words, if you get there and it’s raining you can pay $10 to sit in the pavilion.
I love riding to Wolf Trap for concerts! Last time I did it the ride home was all crickets, frogs and fireflies!

Actually, the two variants for the gearbox are aluminum (P-line) and a magnesium alloy (C-line). This one is the lighter/cheaper magnesium alloy (I think cast instead of milled, which is the main reason why it’s cheaper.) I think the C.12 is about half a pound or so lighter than the P.12. (The heaviest is the P.18 gearbox that weighs in around 6 lbs., but it is lowered/centered)

My mistake. My next question was going to be the retail price, so thanks for that. It should be noted (for those who aren’t aware) that a special frame is required for the gearbox, vs. just bolting a hub-geared wheel onto a bike with long dropouts. I’d love to have one of these on a bike some day.
