ParticipantI’ve seen some stuff at the intersection of Braddock and Van Dorn suggesting that they’re going to get started on that intersection, the last part of the project, soon.

ParticipantThe Schultz Center is actually quite bike friendly itself. When I was living in Buckingham and taking classes there, I would ride along the sidewalk on George Mason Drive and enter on the Rt 50 entrance. A nice fringe benefit was that while those driving there had to pay to park, biking incurred no costs. There is a bike rack right at the front entrance too.

ParticipantProject page uploaded this morning for the Kenwood Avenue bike lane project. It will be done in tandem with resurfacing which will occur next summer (2017). Mix of bike lanes and sharrows between Valley Drive and King Street.

Such a selfish mindset. I feel sorry for the oncoming cyclist who was in a serious accident just because someone felt too good to slow down.
As I’ve stated before, I’m not even a daily rider but I shake my head every single time I see a cyclist make a dangerous move just to keep his or pace.

ParticipantI question if this is a biking event, or an unrelated political event that happens to involve bicycles. For the record, I do not support the position of the organizers of the event.

ParticipantThese data cannot be correct, as I’ve been told that cycling is a recreational pursuit and not part of a “serious” commuting network.

ParticipantI don’t know of any bike parking at the Aldi itself, although there is almost always a bike there from either customers or employees. The Planet Fitness gym (around the corner and down a flight of steps) has a very good and new bike rack. It’s purple and outdoors.

ParticipantI came across this tweet indicating that there are now bike lanes on Kenmore Avenue in front of the Aldi near Seminary Road on the West End:

“Oh hey – new bike lanes?! Kenmore Ave in front of Aldi @AlexandriaBiker @redbricktown @WABADC #bikedc”
I’ll have to investigate. Looks like we have another cyclist on the West End as well.

ParticipantNorth Van Dorn between Braddock and Menokin now has striped bike lanes, and has one through lane for automobiles in each directions. At certain areas, as needed, there is a center turn lane. The road has been officially dieted.

ParticipantI get the vibe (including by some on this board) that many believe to have a right to maintain their speed at any cost, including to the effect of causing harm or risk of harm to other users of the trail. They are almost always in lycra on road bikes (but I will offer that most in lycra on road bikes do not bike dangerously).

ParticipantThe City has removed the slip lane at Menokin Drive and North Van Dorn Street, and improved the sidewalks and crosswalks at that intersection. While it is not explicitly bike-related, it will improve pedestrian safety, and it precedes the other work to be done on the Van Dorn bike lanes between Braddock and Menokin.

ParticipantI was near this intersection over the weekend, and despite the groundbreaking ceremony (http://www.alexandrianews.org/2016/06/king-beauregard-intersection-improvement-project-groundbreaking-ceremony/) there’s no evidence so far of any work whatsoever. Any inkling on when bona fide work will begin?

ParticipantCan’t imagine the Traffic and Parking board shooting this down. For one, they recently approved a quasi road-diet (albeit without buffers) on North Hampton between King and Braddock.
Secondly, there should be little-to-none credible local opposition, as there currently isn’t any on-street parking, and I think that the residences along the stretch (apartments, such as Braddock-Lee and the high-rise) would be, at worst, neutral about it.

ParticipantAs usual, any discussion about bike lanes here seems to devolve to remarks how they’re apparently frivolous since some people are comfortable taking the lane. Are you guys so myopic that you can’t understand why many people wouldn’t want to take the lane, or have their kids take the lane if they’re riding with them?

ParticipantAlso, the Transportation Commission had a meeting recently, and while I think it’s more of a wishlist than a near-term course of action, possible future projects include a Backlick Run Trail from Cameron Station to west of Van Dorn (Slide 37), and a whole bunch on slides 42 and 43
