Yes, but you have to have more understanding of car drivers.. that barrel is a CUSHION for when they hit that concrete pillar :)

I was afraid that was the answer . . .

    Good find.

Do you get more square footage for your $ in Winchester? Because my house in Vienna is teeny tiny and there is no way we could house a fleet like that. Although my husband suggested we build another garage out back just for the bikes, bless his heart (we already have one building in the backyard plus the shed for garden tools, so I don’t think that would go over well with the neighbors).

They’re trying to prevent vehicles from turning onto the extra wide pedestrian sidewalk. And I’m sure someone’s done it….

Well, but there’s a big concrete pillar in the center of the sidewalk (just like on the other side of Whitehurst entrance) — the barrels are in addition to that and filling in the gap (and then some) between the center pillar and the edge of the bridge. I would think the pillar in the center by itself would prevent an auto from getting on the sidewalk.

I’m going to take a picture of it on Wednesday morning and sent it to DDOT with my comments/suggestions. Thanks for that contact, Tim.

Does anyone know why those barrels are there? What potential automotive disaster are they trying to prevent? I’m not aware of any accidents involving pedestrians or bicyclists at that intersection, but the barrels, in my view, infinitely increase the risk by narrowing foot and cycle traffic to a very narrow passage (at a place where we have to be alert to cars flying at us). Plus, they are unsightly because people throw trash on them.

Does anyone know what jursidiction to contact about that? Thanks.

Okay, hopefully the title of the post is not literal . . . unless you were doing a Northern Virginia version of the World Naked Bike Ride, which I do not encourage, should anyone be getting any ideas.

But I do endorse sunscreen on any exposed body parts! Avoid the tan lines that mark you as a cyclist.

Did you do this on a bicycle?!

My husband and I bought tickets to Bikefest. We have never been to a WABA event (aside from Bike to Work Day) and don’t know what to expect, but looking forward to it. Will look for you there (are there name tags involved? I will remember Mark but not sure I met Kathy).

Thanks to both Bike Arlington and Mark for the refreshments! And thanks for organizing it. I really enjoyed meeting all the people I read about. And thanks to Rick for riding west with me afterwards. Hope to see you all on the trails and roads soon!

    Take care.

I will keep riding. I’m from Texas, what can I say. However, I am not too proud to take the Camelbak on the 90+ days (in case you don’t remember from a recent thread, I am a rack and panniers person so this is doable on the commute).

Wow . . . didn’t think we’d have to worry about snow again so soon.

Whatever you do, be sure to post a trail condition report when you get into the office that day.

This is still on this week, right? It will be a hot one, but I will be there.
