My son and I will be volunteers at the aid station near the Pentagon. Say hi if you pass through. No, I’m not bitter at all about spending Mother’s Day helping my son get community service hours, why do you ask?

    This morning on the W&OD:

    Video, if this link works:

    Video at 11

I think there are three solid seconds of eyeballs, but I was riding into a blinding light this morning. But yikes, shaky much?

I think the slackers team will not be on the leaderboard this year. But slackers (the individuals) will show up on individual leaderboards. At least that is the current plan. As slackers team does not qualify for any team awards and was not assigned using any rules/algorithms, it doesn’t make much sense to show them on that leaderboard, IMO.

Oh well, so much for another year of guilty pleasure watching the Slackers fall farther and farther behind on the points leaderboard while maintaining a healthy lead on the team average speed leaderboard (that is, when hozn was on the team).

Sorry — just saw this — Dkel may have dealt with this already, but I do know the senior pastor at Church of the Pilgrims in passing. Let me know if I can help.

    Erin —

I have never seen such a visual, but I think it would be useful. In a conversation with my boss, it became clear she was very mistaken about what “Bikes May Use Full Lane” meant. So some education for the general public would be useful.

The challenge is to keep it positive when it is easy to be cynical (vehicles or construction blocking the bike lane, horrible road surface a la M Street in DC). So maybe you could have an illustration of a family with small kids in a trailer or bakfiets in the bike lane, and a faster solo cyclist riding with automobiles in the travel lane?

Liz, are there any sections of the Tributary Trail network that you don’t recommend riding, say for safety or trail condition reasons?

Hi Kathy — I felt safe on all sections of the trail. That said, I haven’t lived near that area in over nine years, so I’m not necessarily in the know about possible trouble spots.

The trail condition is pretty good, although there are spots where the pavement is damaged by roots, etc. The Northwest Branch Trail has a stream crossing somewhere near the northern terminus. In several areas, work was being done to preserve wetlands and corduroy roads were in place for heavy vehicles. I think they totally blocked the Sligo Creek Trail north of University Boulevard (don’t know if that work is done now — that was back in May). For the same reason, there was a bridge from Lake Artemesia to the Indian Creek Trail that was challenging (I think I walked my bike over it). Otherwise, it was relatively easy to ride around the construction.

Does anyone have pics of the wavy sections that have islands?

I figure the wavy sections help highlight that it is a recreational trail for people to meander through and enjoy at their own pace as opposed to the other extreme which would be building only straight bridges for the shortest distance so people can go as far and fast as possible.

I rode through on Saturday and I agree. They’ve also included a lot of thoughtful landscaping with freshly planted native saplings along this section of the trail. This is the part of the trail that winds through Kenilworth Park, and I believe it links up with a nature trail from Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens (if I’m reading the map correctly).

I failed to take photos of this particular section, alas.

Over the course of several months, I’ve ridden the entire Anacostia Riverfront and Tributary Trail Network — I’d estimate 70 to 80 miles now! — so if it would be helpful, I can create a post with maps and photos. It’s a tremendous asset to our region and I continue to be amazed at how much less use it gets than the overstressed W&OD. Please comment below if this would be useful.

And with the completion of this segment, hopefully it will encourage more bicycle commuters into the city from that portion of DC and PG county.

Been thinking of getting one but the report of bad customer support worries me.

I would say this depends on whether you are the “early adopter” kind of person, or if you prefer to let new technology be alpha, beta, gamma and delta tested before jumping on board. That said, I’ve learned a lot through trial and error and am happy to share my knowledge if you decide to get one and later run into problems.

I believe the concept is great, the product is pretty good (and getting better as they work out the kinks) and the two guys running the company are very sincere, if a little over their heads. I think the product and the operation will get better with time.

I’ll post some more stills from my commutes yesterday and today in a moment. I continue to be impressed with the camera and the light itself.

Here are some still photos from my video of this morning’s commute. The camera quality is quite good; no complaints there.

I am looking at the “Support” tab of Cycliq.com.

I have an iPhone so I’ve had the app all along.

So without the app, how have you adjusted things? (such as deleting light settings you don’t want to have to cycle through, etc.) Can you do this stuff with the unit plugged into your computer? I’m wondering if my frustrations might have been diminished if I hadn’t had the app to contend with and the constant hassle of connecting by Bluetooth and WiFi.

    So, my questions are:

-How do you know if and when you need a firmware update? There doesn’t seem to be anything on the website to indicate.

-If you “lock” a segment so it won’t be overwritten, how do you “unlock” it when your card starts to fill up? So far, I have to do that by reformatting the MicroSD card.

-Have you memorized the many combinations of indicator light flashes and beeps to know what the heck is going on with the thing at any given time? Or do you carry the quick start guide with you?

After a fair bit of trial and error (which involved at least one commute with a serenade of beeps but only five minutes of footage), I finally got most of my commute recorded this morning — at least until I stopped for coffee. I turned it off while I was at the coffee shop. I turned it back on when I resumed riding, heard what I thought was the series of beeps indicating it was recording, and took off. When I got to work, I discovered the unit was shut off and was not recording during Part 2 of my commute. No idea why.

I wish that instead of the indicator light/beeps the unit had a menu driven display, like a real camera. To make things worse, I have the unit mounted upside down below my handlebars so I can’t even see the indicator light when I’m riding.

    Thanks for any insight.
