howler or growler? I confuse easily.
A howler. It’s a quart, half the size of a growler. A convenient size for the bike. The one I have is insulated so it’s good for coffee, too.

1/16/2021 Brewing
I was leading a ride of the “New Deal” sites but always keeping in mind that I needed to get a daily photograph photo. Suddenly, I veered from the course (not the first time today, but I keep telling them to “trust me”) and ran the gauntlet of the dog park crowd (oh my goodness, way too many dogs there!) and snapped this. I didn’t stop for a beer, but waited until we returned to Reston and patronized our local bike shop/brewery…but Lefty Laura will post that photo.
What I like about New District — it’s conveniently located between the Holmes Run and W&OD Trails. Very easy to get to by bike, big warehouse size space so you can social distance. The last time I was there (pre-Covid), their beer was excellent although I can’t remember what I had.

Stopped by New District to get a bottle of their 5 year anniversary brew and a howler of their red ale.

I passed the bike parking at National Airport on my way to get a Capital Bikeshare bike. If I’m there, I usually look at the skeletons and the 1-2 actual being-used bikes, just out of curiosity. Someone had parked their bike and a Burley trailer (the trailer was not locked), which made me nervous. Hopefully they were not leaving it for any length of time.
Anyway, that’s neither here nor there. What really caught my eye was one of the skeletons had this:
Two chain rings in the front, reversed, and five in the rear, no derailleur.
So this is being ridden as a single speed (actually, it appeared to be abandoned, so it’s not being ridden at all). To switch gears without a derailleur requires moving the rear wheel in the dropouts to maintain chain tension, not something one can do on the fly.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?White Industries made (still makes?) a two speed freewheel. Closely spaced, just a couple teeth difference. A bike with long enough track or horizontal dropouts can keep the chain taut in either gear by moving the wheel forward or back. I guess it’s possible that they could get 2 usable gears out of this setup.
I’d have thought most big rings would strike the chain stay if moved to the inner position of the crank. I’d guess the big ring is there at all because the owner didn’t know or care enough to buy shorter chainring bolts, or use spacers.

Now we’re cooking. Here’s my two-fer. “Bon Air” (today) and “Memorial” (yesterday). I realize no point will be awarded for the latter.

Ahhh. So that explains how people are coming up with these great words. I just try to figure out a word or two that I have a good chance of seeing, and if I find something better along the way, I’ll use that. I never thought of waking up at 4 am and spending an hour of research to get an extra 5 points.
I’m the same way. I’m more interested in new scenery than in points, so I’d rather spend a few minutes coming up with answers on my own, and then think about where I might find them IRL, especially if it’s a place I’ve only ridden past. I didn’t get around to finding “swim team” from Liam Hemsworth, but it gave me the idea to do a tour of local swim clubs sometime. It’s a good game.

So please look for the team on Strava called Team Doozy (team 12.) Scott can tell you a cool story about the name.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Hi everyone, glad to be aboard. My name is Pete and this is my 3rd FS. This week, I’ve been limited to sleaze rides with my 2nd grader, but hope to put in more miles in the weeks to come.
