I’m excited that this thread has popped up. I’ve been watching it a lot and wondering if I was the only one! I’m a fan of Garmin Cervelo and am really excited to see them doing well. My wife knows Tyler Ferrar and his family so we are extra excited for him and I was pretty pumped when I noticed he was closing on Cavendish on the last sprint of yesterday’s stage. I was also happy for Thor’s recent victory seeing as a big guy like him wasn’t picked to dominate as well as he did.
What did everyone think of the French Media car? When Hoogland flipped into the fence I think I probably had the same reaction as most. “HOLY S&!#*(*&”
I also think I’ll give Contador the prize for worst luck in this year’s Tour. He has had it rough the entire time. Maybe I’m skipping over a few deserving names but he just keeps falling down.
and sorry for the misspelling of most names. I think everyone will know who I’m talking about.
I think I’ll give Team RadioShack the award for worst luck. 4 supposed contenders going into the race – 3 crash out and the other one has crashed so many times he’s out of the overall picture.
The French TV car should be prosecuted criminally. No ifs, ands, or buts. Hoogerland is a beast for getting up and racing. Nothing but admiration for him and for Flecha.
Thor Hushovd is amazing – what he did shouldn’t have been possible for a guy that big. I’m also a Garmin fan despite some lapses (chasing down Hincapie in the ’09 Tour for no reason so Hincapie didn’t get to wear yellow) and I went wild when Tyler finally won a stage. I really hope Thor stays with Garmin despite the rumors. They’ve shown that he and Farrar can work together well and that the team supports both of them. Hopefully Thor will have a better Classics season next year.

ParticipantPaul of Capital Bikeshare owns a very impressive Gazelle he also ordered from Holland (or purchased there, I can’t recall). His has all the bells and whistles including a dyno hub, carbon fork, and carbon seatstays (!). I have never seen anything like it before. If you ever see one of the CB presentations showing a bike standing where the station will be, that’s his Gazelle.

ParticipantThere’s a great website you lot without Versus should check out – steephill.tv.
My Cliffs Notes on this year’s Tour – neither Schleck is going to win.

ParticipantI would think so, I think the rule is written as motorized vehicles “under 50cc or not capable of more than 35mph”. Segways are actually called out separately in the statues. I can’t find a link to it but I know I’ve read through it a couple of times.
DaveK
ParticipantIIRC it’s legal in DC if your motor is under 49cc. Segways are also allowed. I see this all the time on the Hill, in fact one of my neighbors is a Segway commuter.

ParticipantI have two patches on one of my tubes right now… it’ll be fine.

I think it was her neighbor but obviously no way to prove it.

ParticipantI have an Onguard Bulldog mini and a cable for my wheels and seatpost. This is only for the commuter though, I just don’t lock up my road bike outside. Period. And it’s not even worth much… Even the commuter I wouldn’t leave in areas that look shady. If I lock up outside the Argonaut, for example, you’d better believe I’m walking it home even if I can’t ride it home. I know it wouldn’t be there in the morning, u-lock or not.
Bottom line is if someone really wants your bike they’ll probably get it. My friend had her bike stolen last night off a second floor balcony that wasn’t visible to the ground. I don’t even know how they knew it was there.

Heh. The newer battery boxes seem substantially better constructed.

I’ll probably have to buy another light at this rate – I emailed the company to see if my shipment had gotten to them and if they had sent me a replacement and I got this back –
Quote:Hi David,While we wish we could, we are not sending out confirmations that we received customer’s claims or the status of the replacements because that would add another expense to this already overwhelming cost and reduced the money we would have to buy more batteries.
We are working our way through the 7600+ claims received so far but it will take several months to complete this recall process.
Thanks,
GeomangearTranslation – we won’t tell you if we even have your light. I do feel bad for them being a small business and getting caught up with shoddy parts. You get what you pay for, I guess. I got two good seasons out of a light I paid $85 for though so I really can’t complain. I may even get it back before this winter, but I think I’ll have to buy something else pre-emptively.

ParticipantThe funny thing is I’ve only ridden that route maybe twice when I’ve gone from work to a game. I live in the city and usually take the Circulator to and from the ballpark (or the Ugly Mug’s free shuttle).
DaveK
ParticipantStill hoping to get my Magicshine recall replacement by the start of the afternoon darkness. I don’t really need good “I can see you” lights until I’m commuting in the dark since I live in the city. I just need “be seen” lights now.
I’ll repeat myself though – for the price (and assuming it doesn’t catch your house on fire) there isn’t a better light in the world. 550 measured lumens for under $100.

Haven’t had the chance to ride into Arlington yet, but I don’t live to far from the Stadium. Traffic is VERY congested especially after the game. So congested that I don’t think there would be an issue as long as you can do some weaving at slow speeds. May I suggest taking M street on your way out? To get across the river I take 12th street Bridge. Not sure what would be best for you since you can go north and have your pick between bridges.
On the way in – 14th St Bridge to Ohio Drive, take a right on Maine Ave until you can take a right on Water St in front of the Waterfront. Follow Water St to the end then stay along the waterfront path to the Titanic Memorial. Turn left and follow P Street straight to the ballpark. The bike valet is on the northeast corner of the ballpark.

I confess and repent. I turned to the Dark Side. Today I broke every rule, every courtesy, and rode like a jerk. All I can say is I was in a group, fighting to hold my position and rode within my abilities. When I became too tired I dropped back to make sure I wasn’t putting anyone at risk. Probably won’t do that again but now I understand the thinking, it is a bit primal.

What group, dare I ask?

In a word:
http://www.dinottelighting.com/Not cheap. Work flawlessly. I’ve had the same set with the same batteries for 2+ years. I run either an 800 or 400 on the handlebars and a 400 on the helmet. Also run the taillight
zombies fear me
. Police have stopped me and asked, because they’ve never seen a bike as visible. Seriously, as a commuter that rides at night regardless of the season this is the best $ ever spent. And I flinched when I did it but never regretted once I started using them. I spent this much in cheap lights easily before I got to this point
I was next to someone on the Conte’s ride who had one of these taillights and even during the day it was insane, bordering on blinding. Perfect.
If they ever send back my Magicshine battery from the recall I may buy the Magicshine taillight with Y-connector they are selling now. They’ve had the battery for two months though, I’m not expecting it back anytime soon. I still love that light though, especially now that it’s less likely to catch my house on fire.

how much of a hassle / cost is it to change a flatbar to drop
Hassle depends on how mechanically inclined you are – it’s not difficult but it can be a little fiddly getting your derailers adjusted right once you’ve run the cables.
Cost is a different matter – you need new bars, shifters, brake levers (one and the same if you’re changing to drops), cable housing… If you can do it under $250 you’re doing well, unless you want to go with downtube or bar-end shifters.
It’s much easier to figure out what you want and buy the right bike.
