Nice! i need to google up how to install my salmons this weekend.
Is this when a 53/39 would of made a difference?
Yes but no… if you really want another gear to spin out on the top end, change your cassette before you change your crankset. Just going to an 11-tooth smallest cog will give you a little more top-end for the downhills. A 50-11 combination is actually a larger gear than a 53-12.
That said, it’s a commute. Who cares? Coast and enjoy it.

Are cyclists allowed to ride on the Army Navy Access Road? That would help me avoid the worst part of Columbia Pike.
Technically it’s a private road that doesn’t allow through traffic, but I’ve done it. It all depends who you do or don’t run into on the way. It’s a great shortcut.

ParticipantAs you mentioned Columbus Circle can be dicey when it’s rush hour (and it’s in absolutely horrible shape – the renovation can’t come soon enough), so a good detour is around the Capitol on the interior paths, then turn left on 2nd St NE from East Capitol St and head up to the MBT entrance. That way you avoid Columbus Circle and the nasty left turn at 2nd St NE.

ParticipantSneak preview (since he hasn’t processed these) – my brother got a ton of incredible photos from our spots. The first had llamas and was out on a hairpin and the second was on the final turn of the downtown circuit leading into the finish.

..and there was Christian VandeVelde.

What an amazing experience. I’ll put up a photo thread once my brother has processed everything and put up a flickr album.

No shorts? Really? Please tell me where you ride. And when.
annJust follow the police scanner.

ParticipantI also went through there right after they opened it had to spend 5 minutes wiping the crap off my tires. They opened it way too early.

ParticipantI rode home after the Conte’s ride tonight on my usual route, which involves the Route 110 trail between Iwo Jima and Memorial Drive. Only today I managed to hit it right after the Sunset Parade got out (every Tuesday at Iwo Jima – everyone should go, they’re cool). I got so sick of “Passing on your left! Passing on your left!”. I’ve been riding my commuter so much that I forgot how naked I feel on the MUPs without a bell. That and when I forget to wear bike shorts. Wait, what?

Have they been enforcing it lately?
In the sense that they will yell at you to get on the trail, yes. Don’t know of anyone ticketed though. My neighbor said they also yelled at him down there.

ParticipantIf those are the paired-spoke style, be very careful to check for cracking in the rim around the spoke nipples. Those wheels have a bad reputation.

If your friend doesn’t mind crossing the river, head over to BicycleSpace for the Hills of Anacostia ride. Here is one of the past ride routes.
This is excellent… if I were here this weekend I think I’d join up.

ParticipantThat’s been blocked for a while now… no idea why though. Was my favorite route downtown.

ParticipantThe rule’s been in place for a long time but they started paying more attention to it recently.

Take lots of pictures. HD would be preferred. So would a fast shutter speed. And post some of the best pics here! Enjoy the race.
I’m useless with a camera but my brother’s (lives in Boulder) a pretty good photographer, I’ll see what I can get out of him.

ParticipantI feel like now’s an appropriate time to mention I’ll be in CO next weekend to catch a couple of stages including the finale.

ParticipantYou could do a lot worse than emulating Dave Zabriskie’s aero-stache…
