Yeah, ARLNOW is great, but the comment section is an unfortunately wildlife conservation zone for trolls. Bored yuppies have snark contests for most offensive comments. Originally the editor moderated the comments and actually knocked people off for being offensive – but I guess he gets more page views for his advertisements by letting people be jerks.
Personally, I loved the video!
It sounds like you guys take the comments section way too seriously… I find the ArlNow comments section to be consistently one of the funniest things I read all day.

Update: Found a seller offering a spinergy rev-x carbon clincher rear wheel for 80, says its got no cracks or damage. Is this a good buy?
Thanks,
TDBThose are somewhat notorious for exploding. I think there was a revision to the construction at some point but there’s got to be someone out there who knows more about it than me.

ParticipantWhatever you do there it’s always going to be a problem… that section is more likely to freeze even if it were concrete just because it’s a bridge. No easy answers.
DaveK
ParticipantDo you have a map of the route? I’d be curious what the first part is. Great song.

ParticipantLots of usable parts there… wait, I think that makes me an awful person. In all seriousness I hope the bike got the worst of that incident.

A free blinky light event?! Tell me more! All I’ve got is my headlight
If you pass through the intersection of Lee Hwy and Lynn St (the beginning of the Custis Trail) between 4:30 and 6:30pm on Monday, say hi to the friendly Bike Arlington folks giving out free blinky lights.

Haha, okay. Unfortunately I don’t have any “action” shots (i.e. being out of the house walking around in this) but my wife did get a couple before I went out. The first one is taken at night, second one was the next day after i added a couple of ast minute things.
<= you can see the lights really well here. The green ones are "backlighting" the lightning bolt. The blue light strip is facing down and is still doing a lot.
<= not so much here. You can see the on-off switch, it's above my left shoulder. Attached with a spare clamp I had laying around and twist ties. …one of these weekends I will probably end up putting some of these [lights] on my MTB commuterAmazing.

Thanks so much. It’s actually mainly the part from Rosslyn to the 14th Street bridge that I was wondering if anyone commutes on around that time.
I do – usually on the way home I pick up the MVT at Memorial Circle and ride down to 14th St Bridge. I go home that way instead of the Mall because the Mall is usually much more crowded (cars and people) that time of day versus coming in in the morning. Plus the MVT in the dark is absolutely gorgeous.

The thing I miss from driving is my car stereo. I used to LOVE the sound of a really well designed and built audio system. My next project will be a cargo bike entertainment system.
Big +1 to that. I was “that guy” in high school and college who often had a sound system worth more than my car at the time. Have you checked out Bicycle Space’s I Street Social rides? They have a pretty honkin’ audio system.

Ok so I have to admit I stole the idea of using these light strips for my halloween costume.
And ended up winning best costume in my neighbourhood block party. The prize was an automotive emergency kit _pokerface_ (I drive my car to work about twice a month.) but it’ll be handy for the family van.I used 8 AAs as well (rechargeable NiMHs), although I was powering more than 2 strips. I calculated a minimum of 4.5hrs battery life based on the tech specs listed on the oznium site. Got closer to 5 or 6 hrs. The orange and red strips can run on lower voltages than the green and blue.
Well, now we need pictures.

Coming in from Rosslyn you still have to cross the parkway at least once to get over to the other side? Am I wrong on this one?
There’s no way to get from Rosslyn to DC without either crossing at Lee & Lynn or crossing the Parkway.

Also, any recommendations on a good entry-level marathon this spring – the hordes of the MCM kinda freaked me out – I think I would spend most of my energy running away from people.
The MCM was my first marathon and I thought it couldn’t have been a better choice. The course is very flat and fast – there are only a couple of hills near the start and once you pass those it’s pancake-flat. The National Marathon (called Rock and Roll now?) is a hillier course than the MCM thus a little harder. If you don’t like big groups though, both will be a bad choice. Personally the energy of the other runners and the spectators was a huge factor in helping me get across the finish line.

I’d second what TIm and Dave said — find a plan. The biggest caution I would give is to ease into it and let your knees get used to the pounding. Stick to your plan and it’s really not all that hard.
Same rule as cycling – if you want to save your legs and not overtrain, up your weekly mileage by no more than 10% at a time.
DaveK
ParticipantAs long as you stick to a training plan you will be fine. There are a lot of great training plans out there that will have a 10k runner ready for a marathon in less than 6 months. Pick one that works for your schedule and above all do NOT miss the weekly long runs. I’ve always been more of a cyclist than a runner but I just completed the MCM yesterday. I’m on the fence as to whether I should have been riding even as much as I did during training because I wonder if I denied myself some recovery time throughout the process. If I had it to do over again I wouldn’t ride at all the day after a long run, just a quick 20-minute jog for recovery.

ParticipantThe tags for this thread are fantastic. Also I just use my belt to hang my u-lock if I’m riding around town, I keep it out of “nature’s pocket”.
