I think that’s true if you want to stick to the roads, but the W&OD can be a fine 50 mile ride during rush hour (when there isn’t snow).
While one could do it, I think you’d either sprain a bell ringing finger or go hoarse from shouting “on your left!” if you tried to ride 50 on the W&OD around rush hour.

This is true. I just wouldn’t want to do that at rush hour — though it is probably not as bad as I fear.
That is an excellent point… I bet it’s even worse than you fear.
I don’t know anywhere in the area I’d feel comfortable riding for 50 miles at rush hour that isn’t a loop in a small little area of north Arlington.

Just a couple of examples. You can find these sorts of condos very close in. It’s only when you want more space that you have to start moving further out. It’s all a tradeoff.

I second (or third) the suggestion of Shirlington. From a cycling perspective Shirglington is pretty perfect, right there on the W&OD/4MRT and near the MVT. And relatively quick to get to the hills of N. Arlington and McLean.
Now, it would be easy to roll out the door and do 20 miles of low-stress riding. When I think of 50+ mile rides, I tend to gravitate toward Poolesville, Sugarloaf, and that general region (in MD). That is some of the most pleasant riding in the area IMO. The Loudon county gravel roads are a nice attraction too if you are into that. Point being that you’re not going to find the pleasant rolling country roads inside the Beltway, but you can easily put together a route with miles. Personally I find riding the roads of Arlington & McLean to be some of the safest-feeling road riding in the area. Drivers expect cyclists (and on the whole are very courteous), traffic is not crazy, there are often bike lanes or sharrows, and there are no shortage of [little] hills to give a great workout in relatively short distance. I love having the trails for commuting, but I always prefer to ride on the road when I am going out for a weekend ride.
It’s easy though from almost anywhere in Arlington to hop over Key Bridge and out MacArthur Blvd to string together a longer day.

ParticipantYou can get a 1 bedroom condo in the city for $300k in a good neighborhood. All depends what size place you’re looking for.

Ahh, I guess. I’m just so [expletive deleted][expletive deleted] angry. I want to go back there with a shovel and relocate all the snow into the councilmembers parkings spaces (Not that it would do any good, they’ll just park illegally somewhere as usual).
It just reinforces that the council and the mayor don’t really care. There are good guys at DDOT but they shouldn’t have to be the ones in the truck clearing infrastructure. Bikes are great and all as long as those bikers don’t mess with church parking.

I can not believe that the PA Ave cycletrack is completely blocked RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE WILSON BUILDING. You know, that place where the DC Council works. And it’s not even blocked due to not bothering to plow. It was actively blocked by plowing space for cars, then left that way.
I can absolutely believe this. Can’t you?

Has anyone ridden from Rosslyn over the memorial bridge via Netherlands Carrillon and the little trail by 110? Doable with a CaBi by this evening? By a normal person in work clothes?
ThanksThe 110 trail was unrideable this morning by anything short of a fatbike.

[ATTACH=CONFIG]4775[/ATTACH]What’s the spacing between your hooks? Is that a 29er? I’m designing my wall storage now and I’m trying to get as compact as possible while still fitting the 29er bars in there…

ParticipantSpeed skating and cycling have a lot of crossover athletes. Taylor Phinney’s mom was an Olympian in both.

Supposedly a saluki will run 2 miles in 4 minutes. Not quite as fast a sprinter as a greyhound or whippet, but a lot more endurance.
Mine has little to no interest in running alongside me…

ParticipantMeadowood is an excellent trail for beginners (and everyone else). It’s flat, fast, and fun. They added a jump line with tabletops and bankings but it’s optional, beginners can stick to the loop.

ParticipantPoint of order: Colin Chapman would not be caught dead on anything with an IGH and disc brakes. His preferred ride would be a stripped-out singlespeed with only one brake and wheels having exactly as any spokes as needed not to collapse. Bar tape is an optional extra.

ParticipantThe last icy spot on the path around the Washington Monument is clear. Just in time for more snow.
