We have an Elfa drawer thingy in the closet. It’s great because you can get a mix of shallow a deep drawers (and order them however you want), and you can get mesh, which is easy to see through.

ParticipantThanks everyone. For now, I’m the pregnant chick on the ebike, so I’m not trying to rack up miles. (I didn’t sign up for NBC, because I wasn’t confident whether I’d be biking to work or throwing up — morning sickness SUCKS). Anyhow…

This is exactly what I was going to post. On the north side you can pick your way through to the S-curve entrance and on the south side there’s 18th & Johnson and 20th Rd & 20th St (yes it’s an intersection) entrances. No need to ride on Lee if you don’t want to.
I’m right behind the new Subway, on 20th (a block South of Lee) so heading down to Johnson and 18th or up to the top of the S-curve doesn’t seem to make sense. It’s definitely the most straight line to take Lee. I do think I’m going to start taking the lane instead of staying the bike lane. This morning a driver who was beside (and a little behind) me at the red light, then passed me, cut just a ahead of me to park. I had to stop to avoid hitting him (wasn’t going very fast because of the light), so I talked to him. He said he didn’t see me, and I believe him, but that’s purely bad driving not to see people right beside you as you’re driving. At least being in the lane I’d be visible. And if that doesn’t work, I’ll head down to the trail at Nelson or Johnson.
BTW, why aren’t there sharrows on Lee after the bike lane ends? And why don’t they extend the (horrible) ramp up to the Custis at Spout Run along the parking lot to decrease the grade. A bike needs to stop there to safely get on the trail, and with that grade, starting from a stop is not easy.

ParticipantIf NYC can close down Park Ave, ARL can close Wilson/Clarendon.

ParticipantWe moved, and I’ve officially begun my new commute. Which means I may actually see other people on my way! Yay.
The new house is in Cherrydale, I still work near the State Dept, so my route is down Lee Hwy from Oakland to the (horrible) ramp up to the Custis at Spout Run/Kirkwood. Then Custis to MVT to TR Bridge (and lots of prayers that no one is coming the other direction) and down Virginia Ave. Home is the reverse. I welcome suggestions (especially if they help me avoid the TR bridge). Generally, it’s a lovely commute, though I miss the hill in the cemetery (my old commute was through Fort Myer, ANC then across Memorial Bridge).
I’m currently on my purple ebike, which has a wonderfully ugly beige egg crate on the rack. Say hi if you see me!
PS. I saw one other ebike on the ride this morning. It was much nicer than mine.

ParticipantThat’s basically where our new house is (actually up the hill in Cherrydale), and it’s possible my husband was out with our daughter (it’s her helmet) near there, but I don’t think last weekend… It’s been a long week, though, so I can’t really remember last weekend.
dasgeh
ParticipantAnd here we were thinking we had to wait ’til Lil Gal’s 2nd bday for her own bike… I’m hoping my brother saved the Strider that my nephew rode, and we can just steal it out of their overpacked garage (like we’ve done with most of our baby stuff). Thanks for the tips. Look for the pink mohawk-ed helmet on a Strider/Skuut in Cherrydale next month (after we finally move next week!)

ParticipantMark, this is awesome. Thanks.
As another avenue of research, is there a standard for the size (along with shape and color) of stop signs? I thought I had seen it somewhere for DC’s regs, and these mini-stop signs don’t meet the required standard. In other words, even if the County or State were allowed, by law, to choose to put a stop sign at this location, does what they’ve put up have the force of law? If they put up a cardboard sign with “STOP” written in permanent marker, but I’m pretty sure the answer would be no.

ParticipantLuckily, I don’t have to keep it in the shed — plenty of room in our garage at this point (only 1 kid). I don’t even have to hang it, put I was thinking I’d store it upside down (on the seat and handlebars). Is that a bad idea?
This morning, I pulled out an old cheapo hybrid bike that we keep for guests and haven’t used in quite a while. The tires were a little low, but not flat. Everything else was pretty much as the last time we used it. I’m pretty sure the last time it was ridden was the day my daughter was born (19 months ago!) and it’s been in the shed ever since!
Don’t know yet whether it’s boy or girl. We’re not sure whether we’ll find out. We did with our first but for a variety of reasons that don’t apply now. We’ll see.
As for child transport, we’re considering options. I’m pretty anti trailer (cars seem blind to bike, how can they see trailers? Plus, I like being able to see/talk to the kids). So we’re considering bakfiets or similar, but are a little concerned about gearing in (hilly) Arlington. Of course, we do front seat now, and we could probably manage a front and back seat for a while…
I’d love to be the pregnant chick at Hains Point, but, alas, I’d be throwing up every 100 feet or so. I’m pretty sure that’s not good for anyone. I’m really hoping this movement-induced nausea goes away soon, but it’s getting less and less likely
Of course, I probably felt my best as I entered weeks 41 and 42 last time, so you never know. (BTW, 9 months is a big fat lie!).
And thanks so much for all the wishes. We’re so excited, but (hopefully) realistic to the challenge. Happy Memorial Day weekend, everyone!

The first time I read this, I thought it said you were going to cover the bridge in duct tape. That would be interesting…

Honestly, I don’t know what the solution is for that. The fake wood boards are not much better when wet in my view.
I think the issue with wood is (1) it stays wet longer and (2) things grow on it. We have this problem on our deck at home – when it rains for a few days a week, then mildew (?) starts growing, and it’s slippery all the time. I don’t come through this area often, but was there on BTWD and noticed that the wooden bridge was just like our deck.
One solution is frequent (at least 2x a year, I think) power washing and treatment with an anti-growing stuff solution. I don’t see NPS doing this, so the better solution would be a composite material.
Of course, my opinion is informed only by my research on our deck issues. I’m sure there are people who know more about this stuff, and they may have a better one.

Are you looking specifically into whether that stop sign is legit?
This is something I keep meaning to look into but would love it if BikeArlington or WABA or someone else could — what are the legal requirements for a stop sign in VA and DC (and MD, though I’m rarely there). Specifically, there are a number of these small stop signs on MUTs in NoVA and DC, and I’ve heard that they don’t conform to any law. However, I’ve never seen any citations to the law that they would need to conform to. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
