Have you tried e-mailing Samantha and making the case for e-assist bikes to not be excluded?
I’ve reached out through channels, this being one of the channels. (I don’t have her email address, but if you want to connect us, that would be great).

I think the thought behind this is to truly simulate a disaster. In many disasters, access to electricity to charge e-bikes will be limited, if not impossible to find. I believe this is also why the use of GPS devices (including smart phones) is prohibited.
If you want to participate but do not have a non-e-bike cargo bike, I bet we can find one for you to use. Or, maybe you could just take the battery off the one you have? I know it is heavy and probably not a whole lot of fun to ride around with kids and simulated food/medical supplies, but this sounds like an awesome event and it would be great to support one of our own who spent over two years planning and preparing for this really cool way to help more people realize that bikes can be used for something other than just recreation.
We’re not the first place to do this, and in other places, they have an ebike category, where you have to show off-grid charging capability. In other words, the way you would use ebikes in a disaster. I’m not sure why they’re making this change, and excluding a bunch of folks who have the bikes that will help in a disaster. (Unless it’s just a fitness test, in which case, meh).
Also, if the policy is that an ebike can be used without battery in the normal category, that’s great. They should just say that. About 90% of the cargo bikes I can think of have eassist now. Not that I know everyone, but I know a lot of them, and many add it because kids keep growing.

ParticipantCargo bike olympics!!! Hooray!!!
EDIT: I was so excited that they have a family category, but then I saw this:
Quote:No electric assist bicycles will be allowed. So much for inclusivity… (Other trials have an ebike category)

Expect any trail that floods to be flooded, by the looks of things. Also expect traffic to be a cluster.

ParticipantAh, the left hook. This has almost happened to me plenty of times while taking the lane on Lee. Drivers suck at seeing bikes. It has nothing to do with whether there is a bike lane or not. Best thing we can do is get more people biking, so there are enough bikes that drivers get used to looking for us. For that we need PBLs. And ebikes.

You said this, and I just wanted to highlight it. Still, be prepared for some … er, critique?… from people who hate ebikes blowing by them at 20+ on multi-use trails like CCT, Anacostia Riverwalk, Met Branch, or the Custis. Fair warning.
Oh, this again. As someone whom the roadies FLY by when I’m going 20mph on ebike on the Custis daily, I’ll put in a plug for being responsible trail user — slow when passing others, so that the difference in speed is reasonable, leaving plenty of space when you pass, and not riding faster than you can see/stop. Otherwise, ride where you feel is best for your circumstances.
If you end up averaging 15 on a trail because of the times you slow for others, that still may save you time over a lot of stopping on the roads, but you’ll just have to figure it out.

Yeah, sorry; it sounds like my sarcasm actually sounded like reasonable advice to my fellow Arlingtonians. You should not call the police. As my well-trained kids would say: woman up. Talk to the owner or f*king deal with the great inconvenience this causes you.
I do love Arlington. But holy f*k. And get your bike off the sidewalk.
Yeah, probably too much Nextdoor. And I’ll get my bike off the sidewalk when there are safe alternatives for when I bike with my kids.

I’m pretty sure the last car was illegally parked.
In the video, you can clearly see the parking line and the parking meter, implying it’s legal.

ParticipantThere was just a thread on this on Nextdoor. Many pointed out that if the shurbs originate from private property, the kind approach is to leave a note for the homeowner, to give them a chance to address this without getting the County involved. If that doesn’t work, it’s a Zoning Enforcement issue: “Reporting a Violation To make a complaint, call 703-228-3883 between the hours of 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, or email us. All complaints will be taken and addressed by one of our administrative staff personnel.”

ParticipantDepending on where you are in Rosslyn, I’d consider going around the Iwo Jima and either taking the Memorial Bridge or getting on the MVT after the Memorial Bridge (you have to cross the GWMP, which sucks, but you can see pretty well, and you get to avoid going under the Memorial Bridge on the MVT, which also sucks, but in a different way.
Depending on where you’re going on 5th St NW, I’d consider using the TR Bridge (if you can deal with it) and taking H to Penn in front of the WH then either NY Ave or Penn Ave to go east.

I’d recommend down the Mount Vernon Trail to the 14th Street Bridge, around the Tidal Basin and up 15th Street to the Mall.
East on the Mall (Jefferson) and then north on 7th or 3d. Take a look at the DC bike map to see the route that works for you after you get north of the Mall.
You don’t have to play much in traffic until you get north of the Mall. Reverse (using Madison) in the afternoon.
dbb’s route was my first thought, with the caveat that Madison/Jefferson suck when there are lots of tourists (summer, Spring Break, particularly afternoons). When I had to go cross town for my commute, I would switch between Madison/Jefferson (in low-tourist season, mornings when I just felt like seeing the Mall) and Penn Ave cycletrack (when I didn’t feel like dealing with tourists).
