Sign left over from its previous steep configuration?
Nope. It’s brand new!

ParticipantThe overpass, uh, I mean bridge, at the Lake Accotink dam is open! It looks impressive with its massive supports and unnecessary bollards and sign.

Bridge on Lake Accotink Trail
I realized today that the thread I began under Trail Conditions regarding part of Lake Accotink Trail being closed, now fits better under the Good News on Infrastructure feed. I’m sharing the link to the thread here.

The bridge looks completed, and all the construction machinery has been cleared. They’re probably waiting the necessary concrete cure time (max. 28 days).

ParticipantHere’s what the bridge construction looks like today. (Picture taken on the side opposite the parking lot and marina.) It looks like they’re making good progress. I think there’s a solid chance they’ll finish before summer.
If you zoom in, you can see the finished pylons. It looks like they’re planning a bump-out for people to look at the dam and be out of the way.

ParticipantHere’s an update on the Lake Accotink trail work. The picture was taken Sep. 1.
Looks like crews have been busy removing the trail surface, fair weather crossing and culverts. It’s hard to see clearly what work is being done.Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk

“Improvement” = Paved. 😡
From the description, it doesn’t look like they’re adding more paved sections. They are doing a crushed stone overlay, which will make this section much more comfortable and safe for the many families I see using it. Some have small kids on bikes or are even pushing strollers, which has to be a challenge with the current conditions.
There are still plenty of mountain bike trails off the main loop trail. You can find all of them here. https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/trails/trail-buddy

A traffic circle has also been proposed numerous times for the junction of Four Mile Run Trail and the Mount Vernon Trail. Can you draw a picture of how you would do that one?

When you see the incredible number of bridges being built along I-66, it couldn’t be that hard to get a flyover built for the northbound lane of the MVT. Could it? [emoji848]

ParticipantHow do I signal coming up to a little circle like this one? If you’re eastbound and want to go through the underpass (when it opens), I think it’ll be best to signal a left turn as before–and then go counterclockwise around the island.
There’s the chance that some may think you’re going to cut left before the center island, but I don’t think that can be helped. It might make other trail users more cautious, because the intentions aren’t totally clear. That could be a good thing.

Agreed. If they want those who want to follow the rules but don’t go there daily to go on the correct side, they will have to put up several signs.
They could use this as a template–for clarity.

ParticipantI’m so sorry to hear about Pete.
I live on the other side of the tot lot from the trail where the accident happened. My family was watching our church’s online service with the windows open and heard the tree fall shortly before 10:00 am. At first I didn’t think anyone was hurt but soon realized I was mistaken. The trail had been crowded all morning, so the ambulance was called quickly. It’s been good connecting with Peet’s friends tonight as they stop on the trail to remember him.

ParticipantDid New District give out pint glasses last year like they did two years ago? That’s why I’m thinking of stopping there today instead of Heavy Seas.
