Hey everyone, Todd here. I met some of the group for the first time this morning in Vienna. I’m a long time DMV cyclist but am new to this commuter route. I’m coming in from Fairfax city and I have to say it was awesome finding a group of regular commuters. I’ve lived in Fairfax City for just over a year now and this years bike to work day was the first time I’ve ever ridden a bike from Fairfax. It gets a bit scary until I get past Oakton so it’s nice to find a group to ride with.
I’ll make it a point to meet up on Thursdays. I think some of the other days may be a bit out of the way for me but then again, I can just leave earlier and get extra mileage in. See you guys out there.

Lots of great info from this thread. Much appreciated!
To be honest, I don’t want to leave Arlington. I want to stay here very badly but I also want to stop renting. Sadly, buying in Arlington is not even a remote possibility for us. We’re first timers who want to have kids so we’re looking for at least a townhouse. Anyway, that is a separate topic all together. :)

So it looks like we’re going to be looking in that wedge of Fairfax in between Fairfax City and 495, 29 and 50. Basically around the Pan Am shopping center. I haven’t spent any time over there on a bike but I’m a bit nervous because I’ve been out there every weekend and several weeknights since I first started this thread and I can probably count the number of cyclists I’ve noticed on one hand…

It looks like Reston is getting a lot of love from members here. I would be interested to see what it would be like to drive to Rosslyn from Reston every day. Then again, it would be quicker to ride my bike most days since it’s right on the trail…

The first thing I plan on doing after we move is check out FABB to see what I can do to help.
(OK maybe the second after trying to have those kids…)

Do any of you live around Pan Am?

    All,
I appreciate the feedback. I realize it will be tough to find routes until I actually decide where I am going to live. I wouldn’t say I’m fearless but I do feel much more comfortable riding in the roads in Arlington, DC, Maryland and even rural Maryland than I do on most bike trails so I’d say I’m pretty well used to it.

I’m actually going to spend some time looking through the FABB maps that were provided and try and target some of those areas to see if those neighborhoods will work out for house hunting.

I also think the first thing I do when I move in to Fairfax is get involved with FABB. The general feedback seems to be that it’s getting better in Fairfax so I can contribute to making it better if I am going to be riding on the roads right?

I will definitely check out the Freshbikes rides. I currently ride their “Tuesday night” ride starting at the Ballston shop and I absolutely love that route so hopefully the Fairfax shop can grow in to something similar.

Thanks again for your feedback everyone. Hope to see some of you out on the roads soon!
