Once again I missed this. any update? Has it been put back again to 2020 or some such time? I noticed some construction activity surrounding the Klingle road area is that separate work or has it all been combined into one project?
I think that’s the klingle road trail construction, which is a separate project.
So what’s the detour for phase 1 going through the tunnel? I believe the only roads going to the trail is either Calvert, Porter Street, or that road one way road across from the rear zoo entrance off RCP.

That’s such a short stretch, and as you note, more adventurous riders simply ride to the left of the line of cars. If the alternative route is a no-go, I’d do that in a heartbeat.
Thanks, I’ve been doing it for a week now and just ride the little median until I get to the left lane pocket. It’s a bit of a squeeze trying to share the lane with cars and going the opposite lane isn’t that safe either.
bill,
I know that hill you are talking about but its a ways out from my route. would work though if going that way though.

Participantok, thanks. sounds like a normal u-lock would be better then. I don’t think storing it will be a problem since I plan on using a backpack most of the time.
That ABUS lock might be nice to have as an extra lock in addition to a u-lock and cable for extended parked times. Seems way lighter than carrying two u-locks.

Participantcreadriner – thanks for the offer on the fenders. I’m not in a hurry to get some just yet. My commute may be short enough that I can live without them.
Anyway, for the most part the commute has been alot easier in the mornings than the afternoons as others have suggested. I missed this afternoon’s storm but it’s inevitable that I’ll eventually get caught up in one I guess. As for not biking during rainy days, it’s not really an option at this point since public transportation is way too inconvenient. As for RCP during the rain, that area by Pierce Mill that I pass was flooded out last year during one of the storms. I think a section of RCP was also effected.

Participantthanks for the advice all. I think I’m going see if I can find a good deal on a rear fender. I agree that the morning commute shouldn’t be bad. Only section of my trip that might cause me some stress is a small section of beach road that I need to cross in order to get to Blagden Rd. Sometimes there’s a long queue of traffic and I sometimes see cyclists riding the centerline of the road.

Participanttrailrunner, peterw_diy, TwoWheelsDC SteveO – thanks for the suggestions about sponge bathing. I did a test ride today mid afternoon w/ a heavy back pack and it was alot easier than I thought. I bought some baby wipes and some other stuff but I’ll have to look into those sport sponges.
What rain gear do you recommend over the summer for really bad down pours? Would something like a Patagonia torrent shell jacket be ok combined with DWR (durable water repellent) pants that that the legs roll up?
Also, do you happen to know if a messenger bag (not one specifically designed for bike, but I have a really large one that I use daily that I prefer to carry my stuff in. It’s huge) is harder to bike around with than a backpack??
thanks!

Participantthanks Pcyclist, cvcalhoun,
I’m a bit familiar with the bus routes to work since I had to take it several years ago when my car broke down. It was actually a pain that turned a 10 minute commute to over an hour. Just too many stops, a transfer point and the walking to the bus stop. I’d rather bike/walk up that hill in rain than deal with the bus everyday.
Do you ride to work everyday even when it’s pouring outside? I notice that there aren’t alot of bike commuters on the road when the weather is bad. These days the weather is unpredictable especially in the late afternoon.
