DC Brau. We had been planning on riding north to 3 Stars and Hellbender but at this point it was 1pm which meant a bunch of breweries not far from The Public Option would now be open. Oh yea and I should mention that my Tri-cicles teammate Ken braved the cold temps to suck down a few cold ones with us starting at The Public Option. I had the Alpha Domina Mellis III DIPA. Nice hoppy beer similar to a Hop Slam with nice balance of sweet and bitter, 8.5 ABV.

On to the next one… The Public Option. We actually blew past it so had to double back about a mile and I’m glad we did. The Public Option opens at noon, not as early as Cap City (10) or Bluejacket (11), but earlier than the others we had planned which opened at 1. I guess I’d describe the atmosphere as quaint with a bit of kitsch mixed in and I mean that in a good way. The gentlemen tending bar and who I assume is the proprietor/brewer (he mentioned his wife collects the piggy salt and pepper shakers adorning all the tables) was super nice and the beer I had, a cream ale, was very cream ale-y, which is to say it was light-bodied with malty notes and a touch of sweetness. Chili was on the menu which was tempting on such a cold day but we had to keep moving so we enjoyed the complimentary pretzels, tried to tip the bartender but he flat out refused (seriously, dude would not take a tip), and moved on to the next one…

Next up, partly due to the fact that it’s the next earliest area brewery to open (at 11am), was Bluejacket. I had the Kölsch – crisp, fresh, clean, very sessionable, 4.2% ABV.

This is from Feb. 13 which had a high temp of 28°. Of course this wan’t a problem for pdubs who never gets cold. First stop, Cap City. It’s right down the street from me so it’s easy pickings but the real key is they open at 10am. Hey, if you’re planning on hitting as many breweries as we were you gotta start early. We both went for the Fuel which meets my criteria for a breakfast beer. It’s a Russian Imperial Stout with 10% ABV. Strong coffee with hints of chocolate, as Nick said it’s almost like a Founder’s Stout but not as good, more sweet and less roasty.

So the suggested route was to salmon on the streets including highway on-off ramps, or are these glacier-strewn sidewalks?
Their suggestion to salmon this airport ramp would be laughable if it wasn’t so irresponsible… https://goo.gl/maps/wAUbcCqKsT52

Actually that was my issue with them as well, Large size jackets could fit my torso length, if a bit billowy, but the arms would be many many inches too long. The M size jacket torsos were too short, while the arms were just right.
Thanks for the recs so far, I’ll be checking all these places out this weekend probably.
Regarding arm length, and you may already be taking this into consideration, but cycling jackets usually have longer arms since the fit is based around the riding position rather than standing upright. When you’re on a bike you need more room in the shoulders and arms so the sleeve cuffs don’t ride up your arm.

Sticking with the fine Team 3 tradition of going to a brewpub, I will be going to Gordon Biersch (900 F St NW, Washington, DC 20004) on Thursday, February 11th at 6 p.m. for the first crack at a Team 3/13 joint happy hour. My intention is to sit in the bar area. I’ll be the tall guy in bike gear that looks like a lumberjack. I’ll be inviting all of Team 13, but I’m not sure who will come out. Please also feel free to invite any other friends of the 3/13 alliance, that may have the misfortune of being on an inferior BAFS team.
Hope to see you guys tomorrow,
JuddJudd, thanks for organizing, see you later around 6.

Delayed post… this was from when pdubs and I rode down to Newington and hit Forge and Fair Winds on Jan. 16. Thanks to Nick’s knowledge of the trail system between Springfield and Vienna we efficiently made our way north to Vienna for a stop at Caboose Brewing. This was my first visit to Caboose and compared to most breweries I’ve been to in the area this place is really nice. Not your typical brewery located in a boring industrial building. And the beer, from what I can recall, was quite good. I had the Holy Smoke Scwarzbier and Vanilla Bean Hobo Imperial Stout. Nick had the Caboose Brown Ale and the Schwarzbier. We didn’t eat but the food looked good. Will definitely be back again soon.

Team 3 – You are proving quite worthy adversaries of Team 13 for the title of 2016 Hains Point champions. In an effort to keep our friends close and our enemies closer, I am proposing a joint Team 3 and Team 13 happy hour on Thursday. I can guarantee at least my attendance.
I should be able to make a Thursday HH in DC or VA. Where are you thinking?

Hey team tri-cycle! I’ll be heading to Hains Point tomorrow at 5:30pm for one or two laps and then will be arriving at bluejacket around 6:30 for our happy hour. Hope to see you all there!
In for the happy hour. Maybe in for the HP laps beforehand.

ParticipantTrying to decide if I should put my studs on tonight for tomorrow’s commute and HH. Definitely wasn’t expecting this heavy dusting tonight.

Moving on to Fairwinds Brewing Company also located in the scenic and bike friendly community of Newington. The gas tanks along Terminal Road are lovely this time of year. And so is the Running Light (how appropriate) Belgian Red. Bonus: the sun has reappeared.

@pdubs and I starting off what’s supposed to be a big day of beerneuring at Forge Brew Works in Newington. Oatmeal stout is kind of meh (@pdubs says it has a “hop finish”) but the Farmhouse Ale is quite palatable.

ParticipantLooking forward to Thursday!
And here’s my sleaze ride pitch: they’re crucial! If you aren’t sick and have access to a bike, throw on a warm coat any time before midnight and ride around the block a couple times. Sure, your partner and/or friends may think you’re crazy but it’s the easiest 11 points you can get!

Ok, team, let’s meet for what I hope to be our first of many happy hours on Thursday 1/21 at 6pm at Right Proper Brewing Co in Shaw.
Also, it looks like the points are quite tight between our team and teams ahead of us (team 20) and behind us (team 13), so keep on getting in those miles! An interesting note is that team 13 actually has more miles than us, but because we had more team members getting in daily rides, we have more points. So sleaze rides definitely help too!

ParticipantThursday, 1/21 works best for me and I’m fine with any of those places. Now that it’s for real cold out the outdoor seating at Glen’s isn’t really an option and the inside seating is limited so one of the other places might be better.
Most Wednesdays I do the Lights! Gravel! Action! ride that departs District Cycle Works (26th and P NW) at 6:00 pm. The typical route is out and back on the C&O towpath and ends up being about 24 miles. Afterwards we usually get together at Glen’s in Dupont. The ride leader is also doing BAFS and the ride is open to anyone who wants to have fun and can follow the rules: 14-15 mph social pace, have fully charged front and rear lights, wear bright or reflective clothing. It’s a lot of fun and is on for tonight if anyone’s interested in joining just let me know.
