Dirt, on his own CX ride today. It took him 3 crossings to get that stream right.

That photo is insanely cool. Not sure I’d even try that, though!

Thank you to everyone who came out and braved the chill! I heard my name every lap which helped me get through :) So good to see those I knew and meet others from the forum.

Racing cross is a ton of fun, and it’s easier to stay warm when you’re riding hard.

I also finished top ten! ;)
…9th place out of 11 beginner women riders.

Thanks to Tim & Zanna of BikeArlington, I picked up some cowbells and vuvuzelas to hand out on race day. I might ask my wife & son to pass these out. I’ll be cheering for Crysb (looking for a robin egg blue cross-check). I definitely won’t be cheering for VVill or GuyContinental anyone else racing in the cat 4 mens.

If I don’t regonize you I’ll be looking for your bikes (silver r3, black poprad, disc trucker, CAADX, cypress, bedazzled mtb…), hope to see you there.

Nice! I’m also willing to bet I’m the only racer with bar-ends. But, race what ya brung… :)

This is I think a summary of where we are at. Once we gain consensus, we can write up a final description to circulate and recruit. All this is a DRAFT and up to mangling.

Title: Freezing Saddles: Winter Bike Challenge

Time span: January 1 Until Last Day of Winter (~March 21)
maybe March Madness Playoffs (hard to do if too few teams) – have to figure out how to do this
Happy Hour at end with pointless trophies

Participants: Right now only about 7 people have clearly expressed interest in participating. As suggested I posted a query in the General forum to see if we can get a better sense.

Teams of 5 riders or less

Team Composition: Volunteer Captains; assigning riders based on self declared weekly mileage average (ringers must be separated on separate teams)

Points: 10 points for each day ridden and 1 point for each mile
    Snow emergency bonus=?
    – Any day that school is closed in Arlington (we just have to pick one jurisdiction as the benchmark), then a bonus of 10 points for riding.

    Minimum ride is 1 mile.

    Backend:
    Hopefully STAVA
    Google Site as a backup

I’m in, and I’d prefer Strava too since it’s what I’m already using. Either that or very manual Excel spreadsheets! Yeah!

Alright, I’m in (missed pre-reg though). CAT4 here I come (my first CX race!)- look for a black LeMond and a “Thunderbird” kit.

Also riding in starting at about 06:15 from Clarendon (any takers?), may stop and join Dirt et al in Vienna but having to register on-site will complicate timing a bit. If my captive non CX spectator decides to sleep in I may leave even earlier and do the DR trails into the park (if anyone wants to flail in the dark, let me know)

Glad to see another newbie! I’ll be in the “GLAD” jersey and will hopefully be there early enough to pre-ride the course before the 8:15am race. Then I’ll be cheering on everyone in the 8:15 Men’s beginner race!

Here are some familiar folks discussing winter commuting.

Read that this morning! Cool stuff. I’m planning on riding through most of the winter as well. Unlike Elizabeth I have a more uphill going commute than return commute. :)

Tiny-framed new Cross Check, about a month and a half old with 600 miles on it. This photo is from a ride around Burke Lake today. Gorgeous weather!

I know that I usually mark commute rides as “Commute” on Strava but don’t see an easy way to summarize those values.

A more upfront benefit to me is that every day I bike all the way into work, I save $10. It’s because my only alternative to biking is taking Metro (bus + rail) and it costs me $5 each way or $10 roundtrip.

I’ll try to make it by 6 to see what ‘bug eye’ lights look like. :)

This company Liquid (formerly Spinlister) is marketing their bike rental service by providing free bike rentals up to $25. https://www.doliquid.com/free-sandy-bike-rental

I believe it’s more like private bikesharing – you can list your bike for rental, similar to Airbnb.

W&OD from West Street (Falls Church) to Mile 0 is generally good. Bluemont Underpass is taped off, but appeared to only have about 6″ of water running over the trail. The overpass was easy since no-one was out at 0530.

At first I thought they just threw down an old bed frame to block off the trail. :)

Thanks everyone for the welcome and the links to resources. And wow, looks like good bright lights don’t come cheap. My current front light is a Knog similar to this one: http://www.knog.com.au/gear-lights/skink.phps – not bright enough to comfortably see on unlit trails at night. Guess it’s time to save up the pennies.

Nice to meet you too! I just made an account so I could join in the discussion here. Third Thursday happy hour was a great time. I bailed out on Metro on the way back because my lighting system isn’t up to nighttime trail riding. It’s more of a “be seen” not a “see the path” headlight. What were some of the lights you guys mentioned? I remember a couple very bright ones.

If anyone is on Twitter, my handle is @crysb (same as here).
